Individual thought (using your brains) is frowned upon don't you know - people in general are becoming dumbed down, easier to control. Soundbites are all they take in by in large fed by the omnipotent media and advertising giants. You know that as being a Pentaxian you're a niche, an outlier, we all have different reasons, some like the tactile feel of a high end K Series camera, some bought in because of the value, some because of the lure of the Limiteds, some by the romanticism of capturing the moment with a digital update of what a company in Japan understands the core essence of photography to be. But we're still a niche which is a fantastic place to be because we've broken from the herd, and our faith / patience is being repaid with best in class optics or optics that have in unmeasurable intangible rightness to the images they help produce.

It's an interesting view into the mind set of the DPR "Editors", I'm still on the wall as if it is a standard ruse to wind up Pentaxian's and get an extra 1000 or so hits or if they just generally don't understand the Pentax way of doing things, ie the opposite of all cameras must now be mirrorless, all lens focusing fly by wire, video is as important as stills, optical deficiencies fixed on camera by extra processing, that the camera can make all the choices for you instead of having the capabilities in the background to be called upon when needed.
**** it, I have a K-1 and a FA*50, a 2Kg image making monster combo, seemingly it's the sharpest 50 of them all and they didn't try it with PixelShift, I know it has the nicest Bokeh of any 50 I've tried and I like the way they snuggle up to my right hip when we're out and about walking. It's not a Silver, it probably a Platinum.

Diffraction it is then. ISO was constant during the test so rules out my accelerator theory. The only thing stopping this lens are the known laws of physics!

It's called diffraction, on some sensors you won't notice until f/11, on others you might see effects @ f/5.6. Diffraction will be the result of both the lens and sensor combination.
But also as I pondered out loud (tongue in cheek) if perhaps during the test that the ISO was raised as the lens was stopped down which may have brought the NR accelerator into play and take a percentage of absolute resolution as shown in the MTF50 chart. This would make more sense to me than what looks to be almost a 10% drop between f/5.6 & f/8.0 on a brand new optic.

Curious that there is a noticeable drop between f/5.6 & f/8, almost analogous to a higher ISO at which a certain accelerator comes into play? :) just speculation of course but I'm getting my pop corn out just in case.
