Some from the Singapore Zoo, shot with Nikon D3, 70-200 VR2 and a rented TC-20e III. Quite a useful combo, although one must be very careful using the TC with a Blackrapid-style strap. As it dangles upside down, the lens release button could easily be accidentally depressed, releasing the lens (don't think you'll be carrying anything heavier than a 70-200/2.8 this way though) onto the ground behind you. Had a couple of close-calls over the course of the day:eek:

Anyway, here are the shots.. Tried to shoot and edit with a theme of "Animal emotions/expressions" in mind..

I bought a 85/1.8G when it first came out but I didn't like the focal length (don't shoot much portraits) so I traded it with a guy for a 24-70 (+$1000 from me). Such an amazing lens.. I don't think I will ever sell mine :D

Which 24-120 VR is this, the variable aperture one that isn't too well regarded? Good that your camera is fine after the accident though!

1. Haha that's interesting.. When I had the Pentaxes I would hold and twist the lens with my left hand while my right ring finger simply reaches out to depress the button. That seemed like the most convenient thing to do as my right hand didn't even have to change position at all

2. Pro tip about changing Nikon lenses: Strobist: Pro Tip: How to Quick-Change an SLR lens

Agreed, think it's got to do with the original design of the F mount back when camera bodies were small relative to the lenses. Anyway here's how I change my lens: I grab the body with my left hand and point the lens to the right, grab around the lens with my right hand with the index finger closest to the lens mount and the tip of the finger near the lens release button, depress the lens release button with the right index finger while grabbing the lens, twist lens away. Definitely not as simple as the perfect Pentax way, but practice makes good enough!

Some photos from a local animal shelter that I volunteered my photography at

50/1.8G @ f/2 ISO 1600

Sigma 70-200 @ f/2.8 ISO 6400

IMO the D3 performed admirably at ISO 6400. The next time I'm back I'm making sure to bring my SB700 flash though!

D3, Sigma 12-24

Not sure how this diffraction and starburst thing works on FF, need to experiment more.. But I realized the D3 sensor is a total dust magnet! Got to remember to clean the sensor before embarking on these tripod-mounted shoots (I usually shoot close to wide open so dust is hardly an issue most of the time)

24mm, f/2.8, ISO3200, 20s, 10 second timer

Didn't bring a proper tripod, only had an Ultrapod which was just barely holding up under all that mass.. couldn't really frame right either because it was all dark. I'd have framed it a little down and to the right if I had a proper tripod that wasn't tipping over, and I'd have used a wider lens if I had brought one too.

To the naked eye, you can just barely make out the Milky Way, and so I was really floored when I saw the amazing detail that showed up in the exposure.

Hehe the cool factor lasts pretty much the first day of the dig, then the hard labor bit really kicks in.. Unlike what they showed in the Jurassic Park movies (brushing away at a fully articulated skeleton with paintbrushes), digging up fossils mostly involves searching for scattered pieces of bones, jackhammers, pickaxes and chisels.

If your boys are interested, here's a photo gallery of a day at a dinosaur fossil expedition: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151051106641138.487833.748241137...3

Also, here's a funny photoshop'd group photo that I did just for fun

Scored yet another smoking deal.. Nikon D3 with just 4k on a replacement shutter for just $1950  I figure that the market price for it would be around $2500 or more?

D700 is off to a new home hopefully this weekend :p
