300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

Took my recently-purchased Sigma 170-500 APO to the zoo today and got some good shots with it. Not as crisp and sharp as the better options and flares when shot into light but overall pretty good, especially for the price. The lens mount screws kept loosening and the lens kept losing its electronic connection as a result. Gonna have to Loctite the screws in to fix that problem.

Naw, they were putting on a display for Singapore's National Day Parade today, so there were literally thousands of cameras out ready to catch them and the fireworks later in the evening.

I returned the Sigma 400 f/5.6 non-APO and bought a Sigma 170-500 APO instead.

It arrived just in time for my trip to US Cellular Field to catch the White Sox take on the Tigers in the evening.

These were all shot handheld on the K-5 at 500mm, wide-open f/6.7, ISO6400, 1/500s

For the money, and the size (did not run into any trouble with security bag check), this lens performed far beyond my expectations and allowed me to get much closer to the action than my seat would otherwise have allowed. Will really put it through its paces when the college sport season restarts.

Took the Sigma 400 out for another spin today. Trying to decide if it's worth keeping or if I should return it. Some light fungus in the second element which could probably be easily cleaned up at some cost.

Finally managed to get a closer look at this structure on Lake Michigan (edit: Turns out it's a "crib" located two miles offshore to pump unpolluted water through a tunnel to a water purification plant on land)

Solution to the purple fringing problem, convert to black & white

Managed to get a good BIF shot paired with the K20D. Would probably track better on the K-5

I can finally join this club! My Sigma 400mm f/5.6 (non-APO) just arrived in the mail today and I took it out for some test shots. IQ isn't the best, and it fringes like a purple monster, puts my old Tamron 70-300 to shame. But it seems to work well enough for the price. These shots were handheld with the K-5
