Rented backups are just as good as owned backups. The important thing is to have backups.

Bring in some backup of your own, multiple layers of redundancy for once-off shoots. Cinematographers frequently use multiple cameras for once-off stunt performances. In the Dark knight Chris Nolan had about 7 different cameras running on that truck flip scene. No, that wasn't cgi, in the movie they actually flipped a 18 wheeler:

Having a backup camera system is a good idea, for events it isn't uncommon to have a secondary photographer also documenting events.

I amended my original statement, better to get two the sake of redundancy. And when you are hiring equipment, the vendor is responsible for the maintenance of the equipment and providing assurance it is functional. If a camera you hire is defective you can return it and use the second one, or in the case where you hire only one camera you are entitled to a refund.

The reason should be blindingly obvious to anyone who has had encountered issues with defective equipment. Hiring two cameras would be a better fail-safe, redundancy has its merits.

That is why I said hire one, I'm well aware of the camera issues...and RED scarlet is cheaper than Alexia and a set of Panavision primes.

Basically what I do when I want to do video is hire a camera from RED, and use my own photographic/cine lenses.

Use a RED camera..simple. DSLRS aren't good enough for video, there are too many compromises involved. I prefer to use dedicated tools, as they are surprisingly well suited to the task for which they are designed for.
