The old Leica 50mm f/3.5 Anastigmats [based upon the 1890 Zeiss protar design] aren't much to write home about. It seems most third party f/2.8 ~ f/3.5 50mm lenses are often the worst performers, when we get to f/4, the bar of performance is raised again to lofty heights: many 50mm f/4 macro lenses tend to be quite good.

just pick a fast 50 and stick with it, I own nearly 200 50mm lenses, and most* 50mm lenses all perform identically at f/8
* With a few exceptions, mostly among the exotic superspeed lenses which tend to perform better at wider apertures. I should go through the collection and pick out the absolute worst 50mm lens in it, that could be fun. I recall the Meyer-Optik Görlitz Domiplan 50mm f/2.8 has a reputation for being an optical obscenity.

Not in this day and age. No genre is safe from the ever growing plague of whoops-I-lost-my-contact-lens Bokeh to the borders photography. |
