is the DSLR doomed for extinction?

Who knows? I certainly think EVFs will replace pentamirrors on cameras without too much problem. The biggest issues to me that will keep SLRs around longer revolve around size -- that is to say that not everyone needs a tiny camera and with certain pieces of glass it is an ergonomic nightmare and battery life. This second issue is something that really can be problematic. Battery tech just doesn't advance at the same rate as some of the other technology and I prefer to have a camera where I can frame without using any battery and can take 1000 shots on a single charge.

I do think that we will be seeing larger mirrorless options coming out -- the XT1 seems to already be a little bit this way -- pretty similar in size to a K30. That may help some of the ergonomic issues involved with using fast zooms on these sorts of cameras.
