Why are FF images so much more pleasing than APS-C?

Sure.

But you have a very nice collection of high quality Pentax glass that you were shooting on APS-C cameras. But what percentage of folks shooting with a K70 have top end lenses? And they would need to upgrade both body and lens to get into a full frame camera.

For my purposes (I shoot minimal wildlife and macro) the K-1 is significantly better than Pentax APS-C cameras. But I still shoot the same sort of subjects with my K-1 bodies that I did with my K3 when that was my primary body.

Funny that this thread is still going on when the OP has an inactive account and posted his initial post in 2014.

I would say that overall the difference is primarily in the skill of the photographer and the quality of glass. Someone who purchases an entry level APS-C camera and kit lens certainly can take nice photos, but they are unlikely to have the skill that someone who has invested in a K-1 and a couple of FA limiteds would have. For that matter, those who use medium format tend to be a little further along the "serious photographer" side of the curve. The bigger the sensor the more leeway you have with regard to dynamic range and high iso, but certainly that by itself isn't enough to turn a poorly composed, badly lit image into something that people will enjoy looking at.

Really, with regard to dynamic range, there isn't too much separating those curves till you get to iso 800. It is in the really high iso range that the difference is evident. But if you tend to shoot at low isos, you are less likely to see a difference.

Well, I think there is an advantage with your glass. You aren't going to find a 135 to 300mm f4 lens for a full frame camera for 800 dollars, nor a 450 f5.6 for full frame at 1300. It is the wide glass where you just can't match.

It's roughly one stop different Jay. You really won't notice it much in the 70-200mm (full frame) range. Where you notice it is in the wider angles where there isn't anything close to a 30mm f1.4 in APS-C.

I think a 55mm works pretty well on APS-C, as does the 77mm for portraits, but there is no doubt that full frame has an advantage when it comes to portraiture and subject isolation. It is not a miraculous thing -- particularly not in the 70 to 200mm range.

But the OP seemed to be talking about landscape photography, where I really don't see much of an advantage for full frame except when it comes to printing large.

I think it is hard to make recommendations for camera gear to others. Full frame may offer the best "bang for your buck" and "best image quality," but it is not really in the sights of most people.

I had a woman ask me recently what I would recommend for her to get for a camera. She said she wanted something "with a nice zoom, able to take video, easy to use, and able to take close up photos (she meant macro)." Oh, and it had to be for 200 dollars or less. I ended up recommending a bridge camera like one of the Fuji Fine Pix models. Getting a used kx and a not so good super zoom (one of the 18-200 Tamrons) would have put her over budget and I don't honestly know if she could have told the difference or, gotten much of the benefits that are available with an SLR.

I am glad there are a lot of different models of camera out there, because not everybody is like me.

I think clearly the more difference there is in sensor size, the more likely you will see a difference in final output. The difference between a V1 or Q and a full frame camera's output is much more likely to be seen in real world shooting than the difference between a full frame and APS-C or medium format and full frame.

I like the DA 15, but it needs to be shot at f8 and manually focused to infinity (or close to it) to see good results. Anything else and field curvature and border softness are problematic.

I would say that you are most likely to see differences in formats if you are someone who shoots at the extremes. If you typically shoot at isos of 6400 and greater, if you are shooting a lot with really narrow depth of field, if you are printing really large -- these are the things that come to mind -- then you will see some benefit shooting with full frame, assuming you get faster lenses to go with it.

Full frame is not a miracle format. If you shoot full frame cameras at iso 6400, they will not have the same performance they do at iso 100, but it will be better than the APS-C performance.

Viewfinders are definitely better with full frame, although I have been told that optical viewfinders are passe and will soon be replaced with EVFs, in which case, I guess they can be as big or small as you want them to be.

It very much depends on the camera and the iso you are shooting at. The K5 at iso 80 has an amazing amount of shadow detail, as exhibited above. The K30/K50/K3 don't have quite as much, but they still have a lot. As you go up in iso, you will find at similar isos that full frame will have more dynamic range than APS-C, giving approximately one stop better performance between the formats. As I said above, at low iso (I would say below 800), you would have to look pretty hard to see differences other than ability to print big, unless you are looking for narrow depth of field.

If there is a difference, it probably comes down to quality of glass and skill of photographer (both in terms of capturing images and in post processing). I am not a professional, but I don't buy that there is that much difference otherwise. Particularly for landscape photographs shot in the sweet spot of most lenses, where most things are/should be in focus. Unlike Steve, I only have APS-C, but I feel like image quality with APS-C is more than adequate for most landscapes, unless you are printing quite large.
