Flickr is going back to limited free accounts

I guess. I'm not saying that they can't do that. I just think 1000 photos for free or pay a yearly amount is what they've decided on as a way to generate some income. I'm sure there can be some tweaking of things in the future.

Honestly, though, if I were actively dying, I'm not sure figuring out my long term Flickr account standing would be very important on the list of things for me to set in order.

I would question if any company would agree to do anything "in perpetuity." Certainly not for a hundred dollar fee. I wish there were some other option out there. Google and Microsoft offer a certain amount of free storage, but it isn't unlimited and they reserve the right to change it whenever they want. A few years back, Microsoft took away a good chunk of the free storage they had offered to lure new users on there. But the biggest thing is that none of those companies offers the linking capability that Flickr does.

As far as the deceased person goes, it probably isn't a big deal to them. It probably isn't huge to their relatives either, as they either have copies of images or they have the option of downloading them (assuming they know the account exists).

The only negative thing is places like this Forum where photos are displayed in lens clubs and a variety of threads. I can certainly foresee a lot more dead links to images when you open the beginning of a thread like "The DA 15 limited Controls My Mind."

I think it is reasonable for Smugmug to decide to monetize this part of their business. No one can guarantee that they will never charge or raise prices and even if the price of storage isn't huge, it has some cost. You mentioned some other "generic" services, but none of those seem to provide the social aspect or easy linking to Forums either. And several, like Amazon Photos and Drop Box aren't exactly free either.

Anyway, Flickr has created something that isn't truly mimicked in the rest of the market. P Base, Photobucket, etc all used to be closer to the Flickr model, but aren't anywhere close at this point. It isn't that I am happy paying money to upload my images there, but I don't know that there is anywhere else that would truly provide something similar. Most of my photos are for use here and while I have uploaded a few images to Pentax Forums, the size limitation of images makes it so that I don't find it as useful, particularly not when talking about the qualities of a new camera body or lens.

I guess I don't understand the negativity for folks who have lots of photos on there. There was a lot of angst over Flickrs interface when it was free. It feels as though Smugmug has actually improved that aspect of things considerably and is wanting to charge 3 dollars a month for you to upload images over a thousand. I've tried some other sites for linking photos here, but either the quality isn't there (don't allow large images and actual images are pretty low res) or, the cost is actually more than Flickr is charging.

I'm not particularly into the social aspect of Flickr. The photos of PF folks I see on PF. I'm not trying to get explored or noticed over there, but I do like having the ability to link to larger images.

I do sort of feel as though there is a weird idea that stuff on the internet should be free. But it still costs money to produce content and a decent user interface and that price usually has to be covered by the users of the site.

There's a reason why there aren't many (any?) services out there offering free, high quality image hosting sites. The cost of running such an operation has to be fairly high and I doubt that the amount of money that is made from an advertisement or two on the page is enough to cover the cost.

I was glad to use Flickr for free while it lasted, but I won't grumble too much paying for it now, either.

If you want to get explored, you have to work at it. Become a member of different groups, actively seek out other photographers and like their photos and post your photos to several groups. I think as much as anything, it is related to how quickly others respond to your photo.

From a pentax standpoint, being a member of the "Daily" photo group here can really give your photos a boost.

To me, it was all too much work, the photos of mine that got "recognized" weren't the ones I liked the best and it was sort of weird having people I had no connection with showing up on my Flickr page to like my photo and invite it into some odd group.
