Well, each to his own. The extra 100 grams might be worth it.

Why not get a DA 21 and a KP? The improvement in high iso will save you the stop you lose because your lens is a little slower.

It is pretty clear to me that part of the point is selling new lenses and in that, Amazon does best if they push new mounts. There are still more SLRs sold than MILCs, but that may not continue forever. When folks switch mounts, Amazon not only sells a new camera, but at least a couple of new lenses too. If someone just upgrades their T5i to a T6i, then they sell a camera body, nothing else.

I think the fast lenses are going to be full frame compatible -- FA 31/43/50/55/77. I do expect a 20mm prime to come out and hope it is in the f2 range. That would keep size moderate and yet allow for some low light work if anyone needs that.

Honestly, f1.4 is overrated for most photography needs and few f1.4 lenses are sharp before f2 anyway. The exceptions are quite expensive and bulky, like the Milvus and DFA *50.

I think that Pentax views their DA line up as mostly complete. They are releasing the 11-16 f2.8 lens this coming year, but otherwise the big thing is going to be (eventually) improved versions of the DA *50-135 and 16-50. There are the DA 35 and FA 35 primes out there and they are pretty nice. But Pentax made the decision a long time ago to limit the size of DA lenses by not making them really fast.

I think the line up is a bit weaker in the full frame line, but there are still quite a few lenses (DFA 15-30/24-70/70-200/15-450, FA limiteds, DFA 100 macro, DFA *50, both FA 50s, DA *200/300). That is quite a few more lenses than Nikon released with their Z mount cameras. It is true that you can buy F mount lenses and mount them on a Z7 using an adapter, but to me, that kind of misses the point. Yet in DP Review's review of the Z7, lack of native lenses is never mentioned as a con.

Interestingly, these are the cons they mention in the Z7's conclusion: AF system hunts in low light, due to limited sensitivity

"Face detect less reliable than competition
AF Tracking less reliable than competition
AF Tracking cumbersome to engage/disengage
Touchscreen cannot be used for touchpad AF when using the EVF
Limited AF button customization
Significant rolling shutter in full-frame 4K footage
No live feed at 9fps
Live feed at 5.5fps suffers from significant drop in EVF refresh rate
Very limited buffer
Inconsistent metering, heavily weighted to AF point
On-sensor AF causes banding, slightly limiting usable dynamic range
Aggressive noise reduction at high ISO
Electronic first curtain shutter (EFCS) needed to avoid potential shutter shock (yet is off by default)
EFCS limits shutter speed to 1/2000
Two-Button-Reset and Quick Format actions missing
No linear response option for video shooters wishing to manual focus
Battery life on the short side
Single card slot

No flip-around screen for vlogging"

To me it sounds like there are major issues that could affect performance and this in a camera that that costs 1500 dollars more than the K-1 II. And yet, DP Review gave the Z7 a 79 percent and the K-1 II an 80 percent (both silver awards).

I think it is clear that one of the big things that you see with DP Review and DXO Mark too, for that matter, a general delay in reviews. That is to say that by the time they review the cameras of smaller companies, it is often quite a ways into their life cycle.

Then too, their verbiage changes depending on the brand. With the D850, they will say that is a large, well built camera, while with the K-1 they say that it is unwieldy and huge. Never mind that there is only 10 grams difference between them. With Pentax they are constantly mentioning the paucity of lenses (which to me is overstated), but with new cameras like the Nikon Z, they emphasize that fact that they can mount a bunch of lenses with an adapter -- not the same thing at all as having native lenses. The list can go on.

We all know spin when we see it and that is what DP Review's reviews have become. It isn't that they ever say anything that is untrue (although some of their tests are pretty shaky), but they try to make certain things sound worse or better than they are depending on the brand.

I have read their reviews. As I said, I'm a still image shooter. Landscapes and my kids are mainly what I shoot. What you want is completely different from what I want. I want the best quality low iso images I can get with the capability of shooting high iso when I want it. I want somewhere in the 4 to 8 fps frame rates. As far as video goes, HD is fine for me. I'll grab a clip here or there, but mostly I shoot with a camcorder when I want decent video. I think, from what I've read in your posts, you are the opposite of me, wanting the highest end tech, highest frame rates, highest level video you can get. And that's fine. I do wonder what people do with all this 4K footage they are shooting with their MILCs, but I guess that isn't really any of my business, I just haven't seen much of it showing up on line and sites like You Tube seem to downsample it enough that you get little benefit from it.

It's a bit different for serious movie makers, but there aren't enough of those to actually move cameras a whole lot, I wouldn't think.

I think the problem is that most of us here care a bit too much. Having been told that Pentax is doomed a lot and further, knowing that the release of new products ever since Hoya's acquisition has been slow at best, it is hard to see a review site deliberately ignoring the features that are Pentax's strong points. If you are going to do a review of the DFA *50, it would be well to state that is has some of the best wide open sharpness of any lens in its category, rather than to spend most of the time talking about how big it is and how it is a terrible performer from a LoCA standpoint.

I think most of us here understand that video and tracking auto focus aren't strong points of Pentax cameras, but DP Review does seem to beat those things to death while ignoring things like pixel shift, astro tracer, awesome still image quality and sealing. There isn't a right or a wrong -- the cameras are all good -- it's just that they don't care about the things that make Pentax cameras a good value.

I wouldn't go to DP Review for information -- not because I'm vindictive, but because their priorities (high frame rates, tiny cameras, and 4K video) aren't my priorities. It's like reading a movie reviewer who hates the sort of movies you like and trying to figure out what movies you should watch next. It's better to find someone who likes similar things as their likes and dislikes are more valuable.
