It's funny because there probably isn't a ratio that would make everyone happy. I shoot a fair amount of landscape and personally, I would rather have something that was wider and not as tall for landscape. Most monitors these days have a 16:9 ratio which is quite a bit wider than it is tall. On the other hand, a lot of traditional print sizes are things like 5 by 7 and 8 by 10 where the OP's aspect ratio request would probably work better.

I guess I don't understand. There is no one ratio that will work perfectly for everything. And I don't think that 4:3 works better for 16:9 than 2:3 does.

Probably the issue is primarily historical in that 35mm cameras had 3:2 ratios. At this point, I suppose Pentax could call Sony up and ask them for a different crop, but they would probably pay more for that sensor as it wouldn't be one that was just available off the shelf.
The most likely solution is that future cameras will add additional crops that can be highlighted in the viewfinder.
At the same time, we do have it easy now and it isn't that hard to do a little crop in Lightroom to get the aspect ratio you want, provided you shoot wide enough to begin with.
