Rumours of HD Pentax-D FA 50-300mm f/4.5-5.6/6.3

I'm always amused by how simple a thing people think lens design is. "A simple tweak" is never just that simple. It's more akin to taking your vehicle to the dealer and asking if they can install a bigger windshield. The reality is that the lens body, motor and all the parts have to work together to produce good results. It isn't really the optical design part that takes so much time -- more the part where they figure out the engineering and manufacturing portions of it, turn out a few lenses and tweak the process a little more.

That doesn't mean that Pentax isn't going to come out with a 70-300 variable aperture zoom, but I doubt they will use an existing APS-C lens as a starting place.

Maybe. But honestly, how often would you really want to carry along a 135mm f1.4, even if it was stellar?

I'm not sure about 55-300 for a full frame lens. They seem uncommon and most are 70-300. As far as size, the Nikon is 680 g, 67mm filter size, and it is 80 by 146mm and its price is 550 on B and H. My guess is that a Pentax version would be pretty similar in size and price, assuming similar aperture and 70-300 focal length rather than 55-300.

As far as focus motor goes, I would imagine that it would use a DC motor rather than PLM as it would be at least 25 percent bigger than the DA 55-300 PLM

The 70-200 f4 is going to be a better lens than the 50-300. I would think about it more like the DA *60-250 versus, say, the DA 55-300 PLM. The 55-300 is a nice, fast focusing lens that is quite compact and is a lot cheaper, but it isn't anywhere near the quality of the 60-250 either. The 70-200 f4 isn't listed as a star lens, but it is still going to be higher quality than the 50-300, it will be bigger and priced a lot higher -- say 550 for the 50-300 (this based on Nikon's price for their 70-300 variable aperture full frame zoom) and 1200 for the 70-200 f4.

There are plenty of pros who use 70-200 f4 rather than f2.8 lenses to keep the size down on their set ups and with high iso being what it is on the K-1 II, you could probably lose a stop on the aperture and still do pretty well -- assuming that the lens is sharp wide open.

Kunzite is right. There are two 55-300s in the Pentax library right now for APS-C the HD DA 55-300 WR which is 300 and the PLM which is 350. These are smaller, cheaper and the PLM probably focuses faster than the full frame 50-300 will. There's no particular reason that Pentax should ditch existing lenses in their APS-C line up. People who shoot APS-C exclusively like to have lenses that are tailored to their needs, even if they have the option to shoot with more expensive full frame lenses.
