New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

That's fine. What section of the Forum are we in, by the way?

If we only go with substantiated "news," we could have closed this thread many pages ago. Honestly, I don't really care much about the APS-C sequel, but I don't particularly want people to get their hopes up about something wonderful coming before next year, as I think the likelihood is more in favor of any developments coming next year. The worst thing is to have people whipped up for something amazing to come in November or December and then we get nothing. The combination of the set up and fall is devastating to the psyche of many Pentaxians.

Better to keep an even keel and to wait patiently for what (eventually) arrives.

Well, Mistral75 6 months ago made a post about the K3 II sequel. Lens roadmap: Tanaka-san spills the beans - Page 10 - PentaxForums.com But clearly we are dealing with an absence of information. And into this void come rumors, some of which will be true and some fantasy.

OoKu was the most recent source and to this point he has been pretty accurate, although fairly cryptic in his comments. But I said "rumors" meaning exactly that. This is unfounded and unsubstantiated. If you want anything but rumors, you had best stay out of this section of the Forum... :)

Mistral75 also posted that Kimio Tanaka indicated that K3 sequel would be in the first part of 2020.

All the rumors say next year and probably towards the end of it, but I don't know that there is any official confirmation of any part of the year or that there wouldn't be something yet this fall (although that soon feels unlikely right now).

If we see any new gear this year, my guess would be on a K70 sequel and the DFA 70-200 f4 and maybe a variable aperture 70-300 zoom. Otherwise, probably nothing till next year...

Sensors with higher pixel density typically require higher shutter speeds to produce more detail. Shake reduction helps a bit, but obviously doesn't freeze subject motion. And odds are you will mainly see more resolution at low iso settings (say 400 and less on an APS-C camera).

The bigger issue with lenses is not sharpness, but contrast. I have had plenty of time where a lens was sharp enough but had poor contrast/micro contrast out of camera. This particularly has seemed to be an issue with Sigma lenses. I'm sure their coatings have improved over time and it may not be an issue right now, but I find that way more important than sharpness.

I think it is an aperture thing -- nothing more or less. Some lenses probably soften a bit quicker due to their design -- the DFA *50 for instance seems designed to be best in the f1.4 to f4 aperture range and therefore softens some before you even start to see the effects of diffraction.

Longer focal lengths are tougher in general because they typically necessitate faster shutter speeds and therefore higher isos.

As I said above, this isn't an absolute thing like the speed of light, it is a gradual softening that you see as you stop down your aperture and it becomes noticeable quicker when you are pixel peeping with high megapixel sensors.

There is no "fear" of diffraction. I stop down to f11 and higher when I need to, but I also realize that I am sacrificing some sharpness for increased depth of field and slower shutter speed. Not the end of the world, but if you shoot a lot at f8, you may not see increased resolution between a 24 megapixel and 32 megapixel sensor.

Beyond which, not all lenses will be sharp enough to benefit from such an increase. My DA 15 limited for instance feels maxed out by 24 megapixels, even at f8.

I'm just think we are getting close to maximum quantum efficiency. BSI has actually not done that much for larger sensors in terms of improvement in SNR and dynamic range. In addition, you will hit diffraction limit around f5.6 on an APS-C camera with 32 megapixels meaning that if you stop down much you won't get much benefit over a 24 megapixel sensor.

There isn't a particular downside to bumping megapixels (other than using up more drive space), but I've found that many times you don't actually get as much benefit over sensors with fewer megapixels than you would think.

I think the fear as you bump up megapixels and have smaller and smaller pixels is that dynamic range will drop as well. We've been on 24 megapixels for APS-C for awhile and the brands have perfected that. 26 megapixels is really about the same -- no real change in terms of resolution, but if you bump up resolution over 30 megapixels, it may come with a drop in image quality. Of course we will see when the images come out...

Unlikely. Canon does not have a history of good low iso performance with regard to dynamic range. It doesn't bother the Canonites, but for anyone used to Sony's sensors, I doubt that this sensor will be all that.

From what I've seen, changing brands does little to change the actual output of a photographer. Good photographers continue to turn out excellent photos. Photographers whose work never resonated with me still don't have work that clicks with me.

This is not to say that there isn't a difference. Maybe someone comes away from a birding trip with 30 or 40 percent more photos or shoots a wedding and has 20 percent more keepers, but the difference in what images we see is just not significant. Pentaxians are pretty good at coming up with work arounds to make their gear work, but sometimes it doesn't and they have to move on. But, I think they need to be honest too about what things are truly holding them back from turning out great images.

I don't want to see you leave Pentax, but if you are looking for a Z7 style of camera you probably should just buy one. It is very unlikely, in my opinion, that Pentax is going to come out with anything like that. Odds are some improvement in auto focus, a little better video, a few more auto focus points, maybe 8 to 9 fps, dual card slots in a Pentax APS-C flagship. It just doesn't feel like that is going to be adequate to satisfy you.

Of course, I don't know anything. It could be that there is something more major on the way, but certainly it seems a little ways off as there are no solid rumors from anyone who seems knowledgeable.

For what it's worth, I still have a subscription to Outdoor Photographer (one of the few magazines still out there) and there is a full page ad for the Ricoh GR III on the back cover in the last issue. Not Pentax, but it may indicate that they would be willing to advertise for new Pentax gear if it is ever released.

Odds are we will see something the end of this year or beginning of next. That means at a minimum 3 more months of angst and distress followed by 2 weeks of excitement, followed by 8 weeks of distress over the features that aren't present on the new camera.

And then the cycle will repeat.

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

Overall, I would surprised if there wasn't a K mount camera released this year and APS-C seems likely, although it could just be a K70 sequel. Full Frame sequel can easily wait till next year.

I think the big innovation from an SLR side would be a hybrid viewfinder. That would allow many of the "revolutionary" features of MILCs to come to traditional SLRs -- silent mode, eye AF through the viewfinder, and faster frame rates -- while still allowing optical viewfinder functionality when those things aren't needed.

The biggest problem is that sensors haven't progressed. We have a situation where the sensors have not exceeded the level of the D810. Yes, they have faster read outs and can do 4K video, but from a still photography standpoint, there is no particular benefit to getting a more recent camera unless you need 10 plus frames per second, which most of us don't.

Mirrorless is an answer to a question that many photographers have never asked and unfortunately for Nikon, that may mean some revenue losses in the future. ;)

The KP writes about 27 Mbps per Pentax Forums review of it. This in no way maxes out UHS 1's write speed and is actually a hair slower than the write speed measured for the K3 II. There is no reason to believe that the KP would suddenly jump its performance with UHS II if nothing else was upgraded about the camera. It would be different if the cameras were already writing at the top end of UHS 1's spec but they aren't.

I don't think anyone is against upgrading the UHS supported, it just isn't a magic bullet to fix Pentax cameras and there are a lot of other things that need to be upgraded as well along with that.

I believe the camera division was shut down due to poor overall sales. It is expensive to launch a new camera and mount and Samsung decided they had lost enough money on the project and ended it.

I don't think it is quite that bad. Or at least not at the 50mm angle of view. There are plenty of small 50-ish mm lenses that cover full frame sensors/film. The FA 50, FA 43, and DA *55 all do a pretty good job and none of them is a huge lens. The recent DFA *50 is so big because it was created to be sharp at extremely wide apertures -- not something that most photographers probably need. If you don't need that level of border sharpness at f1.4 the FA limiteds give very nice performance on full frame cameras without being huge.

(I do think what you say is correct for telephoto situations. I just don't shoot much with lenses that are longer than 100mm on my K-1).

Who is talking about giving up on auto focus and frame rate?

By all accounts part of the issue with this thread is that people are mixing two things up. First there is an APS-C camera coming (with a 26 megapixel sensor?) that is going to have high frame rate, better auto focus than current cameras and probably just overall speedier operation than in the past. OoKU says D500 level operation -- I doubt quite that level, but certainly better than current generation APS-C Pentax cameras.

The second camera is not even a rumor at this point, but it has to do with whatever the K-1 II sequel will look like. Some are saying lower megapixels. Some are saying to keep megapixels constant. But honestly, there is no indication that there is a new full frame anywhere close to release, but somehow this thread started including that along with APS-C speculation.

Finally, Pentax needs to have all around decent cameras. That means cameras that people can take photos of flowers with along with landscapes and wildlife. Unfortunately, I think retirees typically have a bit more cash to spend on hobbies and so their wishes probably have a bit more clout than the rest of us.

Maybe so.

My guess is that Pentax is going to push Pentaxians interested in faster operation to the top end APS-C camera. I would guess the K-1 II sequel will use something like the 42 megapixel sensor in the A7r II. It is an older sensor at this point, but still capable of 4K video and 5 fps.

Pentax is probably too small to have multiple full frame models, except when they keep an older one around for awhile after a new one is released. Personally, I am OK with 5 fps, but I can understand those who want something faster too.

So, I think people are mixing up two separate things. Some are thinking that Pentax can use an even older sensor like the one in the D750 to create a (slightly) cheaper full frame camera. Based on the D750, such a camera could do 6.5 fps and would have similar video capabilities to the K-1 II. With regard to dynamic range and high iso capability it would basically be equivalent to the K-1, but worse than the K-1 II (based on photons to photos graphs). How much cheaper such a camera would be than the K-1 II is debatable at best. Yes, keeping the electronics the same would save some on cost and maybe such an old sensor would be a little cheaper, but the D750 sells for 1500 so it isn't as though there is any indication that it would be much cheaper than the K-1 II.

On the other hand, there seems to be a group who thinks that with a 24 megapixel sensor you could really have really high frame rates and bigger buffers like maybe the A9 or D5, but of course, that sort of camera would need a complete redesign.

I hate to keep bringing this back to APS-C, but 26 megapixels is for an APS-C camera, not a full frame camera. Pentax doesn't need a cheaper full frame camera either. If they want to, they can keep the K-1 II around for awhile after its sequel comes out and lower the price a bit. But none of that sort of thing actually moves the brand forward and I for one, hope that when they release a new camera, it will be with higher end specs than we see on current cameras.

Recently released cameras do tend to sell better than ones that have been on the market awhile. Canon and Nikon's MILCs probably haven't sold like they hoped they would, but they probably are doing better than cameras like the 5D Mk IV and D750, which are pretty long in the tooth.

But everything is slowing, even mirrorless and there have been enough recent mirrorless releases that that should be holding steady or growing. Otherwise you have a situation where more brands are slicing up a smaller pie. Used to be that it was just Sony, Olympus, Fuji, and Panasonic in that category, but Canon and Nikon are scrapping pretty hard for their share of that market now too.

I'm not sure how this thread morphed into a future full frame thread. My understanding was that it was talking about a K3 II sequel and a possible sensor for that. The most interesting post in this thread was OoKU's saying that it will be at the same level as the D500.

Now, in my experience, OoKU has more information than many of the other posting on this thread. Although clearly he may not know what he is talking about, to create such a camera is going to take significant improvement of all of the innards, not just the UHS bus. And by the way, for what it is worth, I prefer for Pentax to stay with the SD Card form factor, even if the wave of the future is XQD or some such card. I don't need ultimate speed and being able to use my older cards and not ditch them for newer ones, even if Rico says they will solve all of my problems, is worth it to me.

Just my 2 cents.
