Set the M/AF switch to M for both lenses and prefocused. Used the full extension of the Pentax cable remote (2ft). The Promura lens is very heavy with no lens mount so there was a bit of vibration happening when touching the shutter or focus ring. The cable also allowed me to see when she was flying in as the fov was very narrow through the view finder. Her weight when she landed also swung the nest around a bit so I waited til everything was stillish before firing. This all was just easier with the cable and she seemed a lttle less distracted when I stood away from the tripod a bit.

Don't tell anyone but these birds are commoner than sparrows and build two nests a year. Many of the local residents hang bits of braided twine around the eaves to try to invite the birds to nest in their homes. The birds use the braid to anchor their nests. Sunbirds are insect eaters that take the bugs from the flowering trees and hibiscus bushes that are common up here.
That trip to the Daintree would be great. Drop me a pm if you decide to come further north.

Inspired by Roys images I thought folks might like to see a Yellow Breasted Sunbird female creating her nest below our balcony.
The male was about, but too timid to come to the nest but he continued to supervise from a distance. He is recognisable from the irridescent sapphire blue bib under his chin. Current challenge is to get him comfortable enough to get an image.
These was taken with DL2 on tripod with cable remote. Top image with Promura M42 100-300 @ 300mm f8 1/200 or so and the second was with the DA50-200 @1/180 both with onboard fill flash. With the manual lens for this image the picture was hugely underexposed but the balance of the bird against the nest was okay. As the image was taken in raw the overall exposure was reset. I use Silkypix. This lens has reasonable close focus so the bird is only a little smaller than life size in this image even though the picture has been reduced for web. Levelled and sharpened but no cropping on the top image. The 200mm is still a bit far away so cropped that one.
