Ahhhhh - I didnt know that red icon did that - very cool. Okay chasing back through the threads I see we are now discussing the tawny coloured bird on the rusty fence. Yup you are probably correct that that is a cistacola. It is too slender for sparrow - definitely not a finch as you say. I saw this bird in the same location 3-4 times and it seemed to find refuge in a tall patch of dried grass. Memory says it looks very like the reference picture I posted earlier but not so deep an russet.

Are you sure we are looking at the same birds image ?- I am referring to image in post #2903 above. Living on the island are flocks of the Chestnut breasted Munia that are depicted in posts #2776 and #2779 above.
Another shot of the unknown birds which are perhaps juvenile chestnut breasted munias is depicted below:
Just seems odd to have this number of juveniles in a single mob. Golden Headed cistacola bill is even longer and thinner as shown in image here |

Hi Terry, just had a look at reference pics online and the shape of the cistacola bill is quite different - 'my' birds have finch or munia bills implying a different habitat as well.
Thank you for the input.

This species is common on Green Island, a short boat ride off Cairns much visited by tourists. The birds have become used to the human visitors and act like ibises in the cities. No need for long lenses when they get under your feet.!!! ---------- Post added 12-14-23 at 12:38 PM ----------
Left it with the experts, Des.
Passed pictures and location to the island rangers. By chance a biodiversity survey was being done on the island and a visit from an ornithologist was scheduled so possibly more news will be forthcoming.[COLOR="Silver"]

A finch family in the Darnley Island wasteland next door. Could someone advise ID. Some online pictures look like the Java Munia and other pictures look a bit like the Spice or Nutmeg or Scaley Breasted Finch. Thoughts please...

Not sure of the ID, seems to small to be a juvenile sparrow - more the size of a wren. Hunting in wasteland along the fence line and observed in the seed tops of weeds and grasses.

Thanks Des for the added info. I think the Honey Eater is a Yellow spotted - too far north for the Lewin, too big for the Graceful, and conforms to size parameters. Currently living on Darnley Island which the Outer Eastern Island nearer PNG than Continental Australia. So the New Guinea White Eye is probably a better ID.

As well as Bee Eaters we currently have the migrating Dollar Bird (Eurystomus orientalis) or Broad Billed Roller - labelled for its silver dollar coin sized rondells on the undersides of its wing. This bird species is the sole Australian representative of the Roller family. Another bird taking its prey on the wing.
A Forest or Bush Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii) is also participating in the insect smorgasbord occurring at the moment.

The migrating BeeEaters are moving through the island once more feeding on the many insects that have appeared with the tail end of the wet season.

As mentioned above, I was hoping to get a better shot of the munia - and this one is better - light is better as is focus - still room for improvement:

Tonights evening walk, the sky was very overcast - a migratory bird catching a shrimp I think - deep crop
K3&DA 55-300 HD ---------- Post added 03-02-23 at 09:56 PM ---------- Below is a project I am working on. This is a flock of Lonchura castaneothorax or Chestnut breasted munia (sometimes also called mannikin or finches). These pics were taken close to sunset and very dark and this is after cropping and adjusting of levels. One day I hope to get in full sun and somewhat closer to the camera.
