Missing the M42 Macro Takumar 50, particularly the pre-set version... Gives a whole new perspective.

That's brilliant Ivan. Made my morning. I get routinely asked an alternate form of the same question - Did you pack your own bag? Which provides them with an affirmative response and also ensures that I have incriminated myself if anything inappropriate is found during subsequent scans and checks. But the answer doesn't help if some person has added something to a pocket without my knowledge.

Responding to these requirements in a dutiful and obsequious manner is the easiest policy - As a young person I used to wonder how the Nazis managed to get all those people to walk to their death and board the cattle trucks and so on. As a member of the cattle class during international travel I now have discovered the answer. It is just easier to go with the flow.

Well I'm not sure it helps but today I am using Edge and two posters but not Dave, have little boxes instead of images showing for me and when I click through them I can see the missing images on Flickr. Very odd. My setup is stock standard Windows 10. Dave - your images are beautiful as always :-)

Spider on a leaf on balcony today. It was in a very relaxed mood as it seemed happy to have a Super-Multi-Coated Macro Takumar 100mm and various tubes pointed at it. K3 camera hand held at ISO1600.

If I am having a Takumar day I just put my single genuine adapter on the body with spring intact and leave it there and swap the lenses out as needed just like when using a Spotmatic many years ago. I have used this adapter for twelve years starting with the DL2. Never had a binding issue.

For the first few years all lenses new to me apart from a couple of kit zooms were second hand m42 lenses ranging from 28 to 360mm. Now I have k mount AF as my eyes get older so I have sold off the m42 lenses from 120mm up. Still enjoy the wides to normal Takumars and just haven't bothered purchasing modern macros as the 50 and 100 mm Taks are so good.

Congratulations on getting the K70 and you will for sure enjoy the new lease of life you have given to those jewels in your collection.

Number 2 does it for me - great shot at bugs eye view - texture and colours both - wonderful in the old sense of the word.

Depends where you are in Australia - we still have sugar cane fields being burned off prior to harvest in the north of Queensland and lots of fires are lit and allowed to burn uncontrolled through open bushland in Far North Queensland as some kind of conservation method...

Love the pic of the little horse though - looks cold despite the sunny vista.

Hi Dan,
I have and use both lengths: the preset version of the Super Tak 50mm and the S-M-C version of the Tak 100mm. Get one of each. They are not expensive and they are both useful due to the different working distances they provide. I use the 50mm more. I have used both with the K20 and the K3 and as with all macro it is about getting lots of light on the subject in order to get the aperture smaller to increase depth of field so the F4 start point is not a big issue especially with cameras that do better with more capabilities at the higher ISOs. That was the big area of advantage that lead me to move up to the K3 over the K20 so that is going to be a challenge on your two bodies. The 50mm seems lighter and is smaller so gets added to the bag more often.

Both lenses are great and as a consequence I have not felt the need to purchase any other modern macro as the Takumars are sufficient for my uses.

Good luck with the choice.

This image reminds me of a Jigsaw puzzle my siblings and I had as children 50 years ago called Bluebell Wood. It was manufactured in GB and had a few hundred pieces and was really difficult - my memory says it looked just like your image - hadn't thought of that puzzle in years.

Thank you for the memories (of the frustration) ;-)

Yup these frogs can 'hold' onto vertical surfaces including window glass and remain asleep. Their bodies flatten up against the surface and almost create a suction cup. I have seen small frogs that have died in this position and still be stuck on a wall. Dessication is a big challenge for them. This little guy was a little bit disturbed by the camera lens so the membrane over the eye was a little bit open.

Macro tak 50mm preset on K3 - Wet season brings tree frogs Litoria infrafrenata - this one on a MilkyPine leaf Alstonia actinophylla next to the front balcony stairs. This one is only about 8cm long.

Warm colour shift - just like Kodak in the 70s - general non sharpness and good dynamic range and overall film graininess.

There is an interesting dissonance here as it looks like a photo from the 'photos from before the 1990s' thread but all the cars and regos are current - a real time shift photo

No, this is a common 'feature' on lots of the Taks. Infinity is still attained.

Does the rear lens element protrude beyond the outside of the mount on the rear of the lens when it is fully wound back? If so, almost certainly an 8 element copy. There are other clues as well if you do a search.
