A centrally aligned subject should be avoided generally.
If the snake's head were placed onto a point of interest as per the rule of thirds, then you would have a better composed image. See here for more info on this: Rule of Thirds, Photography tutorials. The Rule of Thirds., Photography Tips: The Rule of Thirds and Photography.

And for more in depth reading on the fundamentals of composition and framing, see these articles: Learning basic photographic techniques - PentaxForums.com and Tutorial: cropping with rule of thirds - PentaxForums.com.

Hi SJM.
You got the creeper in sharp focus.
In terms of critique, I'll suggest that attention should be paid to composition and background control. Central subjects tend to leave a lot of 'empty' space in the image that doesn't offer much to the look of the image. The environment of the snake, although difficult to control, particularly when it's not your snake, makes an important contribution with the overall image and ought to complement the subject rather than vie for attention from it.

Lighting was adequate, however a little flat and uncontrolled - a better balance of shadow and highlight detail would allow for more texture to be rendered on the snake's scales, which is the main feature of this image.
