Pentax in general has been relatively affordable, but with Pentax FF, it is now less so. Add up the cost of the K-1 to the 15-30, 24-70, 70-200 and 150-450, and you have quite an expensive kit indeed.
But image results between APS-C, which is significantly cheaper to buy into, and FF, bulkier and more expensive in general, is hard to justify going FF if cost is a significant issue.
To me it's akin to the law of diminishing returns, however image quality from an FA 31 limited is a few notches greater than say the FA 28 that the experience of shooting with the FA 31 justifies its 3-4x cost over the FA 28, for example. And that happens with every image taken with the lens, a legacy that for some photographers it is worth investing into.

5DSR seems better in some detail over the 5DIV but not with the green feathers. Both Pentax cameras seem to rise above both Canons in detail, colour and contrast. And these were not even pixel shifted results.

Weddings are such a dynamic event that I would find too many opportunities missed by being confined to a prime. It takes too long to switch lenses when the moment occurs, and within the time this is done, the moment is gone. Fast zooms are the way to go.

I figured as much. Even with gross underexposure there isn’t much magenta casting in the image. But how it was demonstrated was in a scene that was lit but had a dark subject in it, then pushing that EV+5 he was able to show a lot of that cast that wasn’t evident on the K-1. Thanks again Vincent.

We could get lost in the technicalities of the debate, but the expertise in the field is more at the engineering level rather than the photography level. It’s all very enlightening, and factual, but not for everyone.
In the end it comes down to the intent of the Ricoh engineers on how they wanted the Sony sensor to be tweaked on the K-1 to produce even cleaner high ISO results, as opposed to trying to save the photographer time in PP. Same with PS and DPS with sharpening. Few people whose photos are destined for important prints or publications will send those images SOOC. There will be some PP work to do.

Thanks. I’ll be doing my own tests to see myself but your sample only shows minor magenta casting overall, which I would expect all cameras to produce in those circumstances.

Okay, what is your highest acceptable ISO on the K-1 for your purposes? What size do you print/display your images to determine this?

Yes, these are unprecedented results at very pragmatic/meaningful ISOs.
It's certainly made good photography less restrictive/elusive.

Have you purposely under-exposed at ISO 100 then pushed exposure to +4 or +5 to see the effect on shadow areas?

It's fascinating, this human nature thing... Now, I don't want to sound dismissive of your point, I actually agree that people would rarely shoot above ISO 12,800. However, for years members here have lamented over how Pentax cameras just didn't perform well at high ISO, and that photographers, esp. in the wedding business, absolutely NEEDED that high ISO performance. Low light situations demanded it!
Now look at us! We're saying high ISO is irrelevant!
Pentax must be confused by market demand.
But like many innovative technologies, people don't tend to know what they need until the technology has been developed and it's in their hands.
I would go as far as to say that shooting clean images at ISO 6,400 and 12,800 is a definite virtue above the barely perceivable loss of detail noted between the K-1 and K-1 II images. In fact, the microcontrast in the K-1 II images with PS and DPS may even have the edge over rivals.
But noise reduction was a big reason why people would go from APS-C to FF, so the effort makes sense even in a 36Mp camera, less dense pixels than in the K-3.

Thanks for that. So I gather this finding has then been debunked with the latest version of ACR/Lightroom camera profiles? Or has anyone still getting the magenta cast in shadow areas of underexposed shots pushed in PP?

This is one thorough and technical study of the two cameras. Although not much between them, barely even at pixel peeping ISO 100-1600 images, the quantifiable differences are there. This is definitely a geek's test! Very informative.

True, however the posted image at ISO 8000 was processed with NR to zero, and the colour noise in it at 100% was minimal, especially over the lit subject matter where it counts the most.
That is why even after all the 'inaccurate' comparisons, I do believe the K-1 II is getting more bad press than it deserves.

Definitely too much drama, but it is more of an issue to some than others. To those that it does matter, then their discussions get more technical and even heated. So far it's been rather cordial. Thanks to all involved. Shoot with the tool that does the job and derives pleasure, and if not interested, leave the technical details to those who care about the finest aspects of the camera's output.

Notwithstanding the testing limitations provided on DPR, and their statement on the website that ACR was their RAW image editor, this is their image comparator between the most recent Pentax iterations out of interest:
Pixel shift image is by far and away the winner in detail, colour noise control and micro contrast, IMHO.
Would it be safe to assume that the same lens profile would have been used between the three cameras to provide these results?

This, in my field, would be called out as being intellectual dishonesty. Yet despite this, the detail after Pixel Shifting is markedly better than the stiff competition's images that have been innately sharpened by LR.
Has there been any user here who has presented any of their night sky images showing evidence of image degradation compared to the K-1 or even the K-5/3?

That's great, thanks for sharing these. It does show a degree of detail and cleanliness never seen before at these ISOs.
...which pretty much sums up the real world results people are getting, even on the studio tests. Pixel Shift just adds a notch greater detail to still images. Probably impossible to tell, but it would be optimistic to believe Dynamic Pixel Shift would enable handholding still scenery to be captured with extra detail as well.

This is a great test image comparator.
Look at the colour noise difference over a black and white area of the scene captured.
Arguably, the colour noise is still more favourable in the K-1 II without pixel shift, perhaps "sacrificing" detail compared to the D850 and perhaps the Z7, although the D850 image appears to be over-sharpened. But WITH pixel shift, the K-1 II image rendition is leagues ahead of the competition:

Thanks for sharing this. My first impression is that pixel shift makes a definite improvement in reduction of colour noise at high ISO. Unparalleled by any other camera compared. The detail in the K-1 II is remarkably more refined and clear. Even without pixel shift, the K-1 II has a more appealing finish yet with less colour noise. No evidence here of over-denoising or over-sharpening compared to the competition.
What's all the fuss about?
