All hotshoe flashes would 'work' but few that would communicate with the modern dSLRs to calculate automatic exposure, which is what I assume you're after.

Also be weary of each older flash's trigger voltage as a voltage too high (like above 30V) may overload the dSLR's electronic circuitry.
