Thanks Mike and Gordon.
Using your guidance I set it to M and it works great. It is NOT an A lense so presumably, it is an A.
Tried it with an SMC PENTAX 1:4/200 AND AN SMC 1.4/50 and flash did NOT wash-out.

I'm currently using a K100D - nothing comapred to the beautiful istD. As for the SR - where is it - really, I don't have the shakes.
Anyway, I'm using the 50mm 1.4 on the 100D set at f22 but when using the flash everything is WASHED-OUT.
Anyone know why this might happen?
