There is no field curvature problem with 12-24 and you can have the entire scene in focus without any trick. Hyperfocal works as expected with 12-24, so I expect a lens twice as expensive to have field curvature corrected and to focus property in every situation.

I didn't see new firmware update so I guess it is not corrected.

Thanks for the samples nu_llpo!

On this one, the edges looks very blured, I hope this is just because the focus is at infiny instead of hyperfocal.

nu_llpo, do you have the 12-24 lens? (or 15-30 maybe). I am looking for the feedback of a 12-24 user to see if the new lens is really better?

The main question is not to put all the latest technology in the next ASP-C, but only what really matter to take better photos. It's more what did you miss in your current body to take better photos?

Personnally I would like the following improvement from my K-3II:
- Keep the GPS unit (flash and GPS would be perfect) - the main reason why I didn't look at the KP at all...
- Better sensor - always good, 20M, 24M or 26M
- Better AF - I miss a lot of shot because of poor AF with my DA*300mm, but I think it's more about lenses than body.
- 5 axis stabilization for DA300mm - exist in KP
- Oriented screen for creative landscape shot - exist in KP
- Wifi and tethering (for LiveView on my phone) for product photography or difficult angleview - exist in KP
- PixelShiftResolution of the K-1
- Higher resolution screen to detect focus problem on field.
- New cool software features - pixel shift braketing, focus stacking braketing, better (auto?) AF finetuning, eye detection, super resolution, pixel shift to four corner then merge in panorama, this kind of stuff...
- I am not against EVF if that improve AF.
- I don't need 4K video but whhy not, touch screen is not useful to take better photo but why not.

I think it is possible to have those features in a $1400 camera, and most of the list already exist in KP or K-1. This is my K-3III...

We don't need a $2000-$2500 APS-C flagship, it make no sense for a K-5/K-3 customer. When K-3 was released, it was a totally new hardware in regards to the K-5, almost everything has been improved, there was no downgrade, huge improvements, and the price stay the same as the K-5 when it was release. I couldn't be happier if the K-3 evolved follow the same path...

A huge improvement would be to use the new 26M Sony sensor that can go up to 16-bit.

I agree, KP is too small to put a normal battery in it, and it have no GPS unit :(
A such body is not scalable enough to last 3 or 4 generations, such as K-7, K-5, K-5II, K-3, K-3II. There was room for new hardware in the original K-7 body.

Having the K-3 evolved in the body of the K-1 would kill my interest in APS-C. Now that FF get cheaper and cheaper, APS-C real force is more than never size and weight. I would love to have a k-1 like body, but it has to be smaller... and cheaper than K-1.

If you want and APS-C in the k-1 body, just way for the k-1 evolved with a 42-48 mpxls sensor, that with have 20-24 mpxls in crop mode and voilą :) but personally I prefer a k-3/kp sized body to fit my APS-C lenses.

I think the main problem of the super cool 11-18mm is the lack of visibility on the future of APS-C.

We just know that a new flagship will arrive in 2019 (or later) but will it be priced like the K-3II (which is fine) or will it be too expensive for K-3II users (I do not want to pay 2000€ to update my K-3II). We also don't know if this flagship will be the last Pentax APS-C... and they is no more APS-C lenses on the roadmap.

This is the kind of information I want to know and I would like PF ask in the CP+ interview. We really need to know if 16-50 will be replaced... to see if its a good or bad idea to stick to APS-C.

With such poor visibility, its hard to justify a 1400€ purchase, especially as I do not shoot at f/2.8... I look forward for the reviews and field tests, and I really hope that 11-18 will be better than 12-24 at f/8, and I hope that the lens will not be ruined by poor quality sunstars...

I can see it on landscapes, it is generaly not a problem except when I take night cityscapes, the sunstars of street lights at the center of the frame seams slightly out of focus. I noticed that its better at f/5.6 than f/8 so I shot my landscapes at f/5.6 now and its fine.

Thank you fairyvilje! According to your samples, I think your lenses have the same behavior than my lenses.

1) 16-85 is very sharp in the center, but edges are soft and blurry. I can't call it an outstanding lens, and there is too much difference between edges and center for using it as a landscape lens and to stitch a panorama.

2) 50mm is very sharp edge to edge, you cannot see much change between edge and center sharpness.
May be it is because you were focusing on the leftmost ink bottle, but your lens seams to be sharper on edges than in center. My copy of 50mm (and the one I send back for an exchange) have the exact same behavior, it is less sharp (very slighly out of focus) in the center... which is strange. I am happy to see its not my lens, but it is still a very fine lens for landscape and it produce amazing sunstars thanks to its 7 straight aperture blades :) I would have purchased the HD FA35mm if they have added a 7th aperture blade...

Any chance you can post a photo of the edge/corners of your 16-85 ? Because online samples I can find (ephotozine) look like my copy.
Here attached my copy compared to DA50mm/1.8

Pentax never said they will replace the 16-50mm, and I don't speak of a refresh like the FA 35mm...

I just send back the 16-85 I purchased... May be it is my sample, but I can't recommand this lens. The IQ is just bad around the edges, its better than the two copies of the 20-40mm I tried too, but still not good enough for a fine art print, or for stitching a panorama...

From the Star lens special site (http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/star_lens/special/sp_da11-18/):

QuoteQuote:

Along with the smc PENTAX-DA★ 16-50mm F2.8ED AL[IF] SDM and the smc PENTAX DA★ 50-135mm F2.8ED[IF] SDM, this lens completes the large-aperture zoom lens lineup...

No. No pentax! The 16-50 do not complete the large-aperture zoom lens lineup. The 16-50 is an old lens suited for K10D with bad corner quality and lot of CA and it need to be replaced in priority with a modern 16-50, 18-50 or 17-70 lens with a fast motor and top notch IQ corner to corner.

p.s. too bad there is no development story for the 11-18 on the special site.

DA35/2.4 is not a fantastic lens, IQ is just ok, corner are soft even closed down and 6 aperture blades is really outdated...

To my mind its just a quick refresh of a 35mm to wait for the DFA* 35mm which will arrive in 2020 (or later).

Good news if 11-18mm comes in February, but $1500 is a lot of money for an APS-C lens. It's almost as expensive as the FF 15-30 and three time more expensive than Tokina equavalent zoom. It's more than what I was expecting, but I may still get one (during sales) if it's sharp corner to corner and if it produce beautiful sunstars.

The 35mm/F2 is a surprise, but not necessarily a good one: they just changed the rubber, the hood and the coating. Probably still only 6 aperture blades. Not sure the performances will improve.
