I bought fuji premium photo paper 4×6 for arround 6€ (50 sheets) and six cartridges with one black extra for 12€ :) Not expensive IMO.

My firts printer was an Epson 660 I think. After that I had a HP 5150 and a few months ago I bought the Epson PX800FW and Canon Selphy CP 720. I like the bigger one a lot more and prefere to print A4 photos :) Great quality! Scott Kelby in his books talks only about Epson :D
