Mine shafts are about as dangerous as it gets. Here in Colorado, we've had all sorts of problems with accessing peaks due to property owners restricting access. This was caused by fears of lawsuits by idiots who ventured into old mines and got injured badly or died. A law was recent passed to relieve the land owners of this burdon, but it will take years more for the trails to open.
Unless you REALLY know what you are doing and know the history of the mine (even then I wouldn't), DON'T ever go into a mine. They are death traps.
