Yes, DNA sequencing and more technical methods are re-arranging all of biology into new clades. There is a bewildering array of subspecies and populations within a species. You can get as deep into the woods as you want when you start studying any subject.

Japanese Beetle, FYI.

---------- Post added 01-20-22 at 04:22 PM ----------

Another predator, the Great Spreadwing Damselfly. This is a female, recently emerged I think.

A parasite, the Tiger Bee Fly - which parasitizes Xylocopa Carpenter Bee nests. That's why it was on our deck...

And there are plenty of Penstemon blossoms to share, like this Bombus bimaculatus and Katydid nymph. Or is that a grasshopper?

Here's an unusual little moth. Sorry if it looks a bit soft. The flower is a Daisy Fleabane, a very small Aster family plant. Flowers are about 1cm across, including petals. A little breeze makes it difficult!
Alan and I had never seen one of these, they're pretty unusual critters.

And here's a busy girl. A Hoplitis genus bee. I've never been able to get great photos - as soon as they leave the tubular flowers they seem to favor, they take off at full speed. This was pure good timing luck on my part.

This species has become a regular. Almost always found on the False Sunflower. Apparently it could be a host plant for them. If so, it has not damaged the plant at all, which has been established in this corner of the garage. I can't move it, there's so much gravel - and the tap root is probably 6 feet long anyway.

Odd little moth I think? - Coleophora mayrella - BugGuide.Net

An interesting little moth which caught our eye at the James Woodworth Prairie Preserve. This was a breezy day, which didn't make photography easy.

Buttonbush is a fantastic shrub. We planted a few over the past couple of years, and have helped some neighbors get a few installed as well.

You had some of us confused! At least I'm no longer puzzled by this.
The Chinese mantis are a problem here in the Upper Midwest. They're out-competing our big orb-weaving spiders for the big prey.

Where are you located? In the US?
I think this is a Chinese Mantis, they're very successful invaders here in the US. Particularly where there are no native mantises they're suppressing the populations of large spiders.

This is a bee-mimic robber fly, a predator. Note the antennae and lack of mandibles.
Nice shots of it. There is a lot of mimicry in nature.

They grab on with their mandibles. I presume if they die that way, they stay clamped on until knocked off or they degrade enough. The males do take a while to wake up, it's not worth the energy to get a head start on the morning.

Red Paper Wasp. The Polistes wasps are great subjects, they're pretty chill. I haven't seen P. carolina around here but back in Ohio we used to see them.

Megachile latimanus male on patrol. These guys stake out territory, making them a bit more predictable for good photos.

One of the Ironweed species, I think. (Veronia)
Great prairie plant, but can be a little weedy in a yard. Then again, so can a lot of plants. They're great for attracting pollinators.

One of the ubiquitous crab spiders subduing a drone fly. I only noticed by the sound of the drone fly trying to escape. These crab spiders change colors from white to yellow depending on the flowers they're hunting on. It takes a couple of days to accomplish, but it's really effective.

Spilomyia longicornis on Rattlesnake Master. This is a big syrphid fly, note the striped/spotted eyes! This is a female. There's a little subject motion blur in the photos, but I'll take them.

At last weekend's prairie walk I introduced people to the dogbane beetle. A little girl fell in love as it crawled up her hand to fly off. It's hard to comprehend how beautiful that prismatic green is.
