Trumpeter Swans! First time I've ever seen them, and this pair has set up camp in our humble town for nearly a month now. They're grouping with three Mute Swans, which aren't rare but slightly unusual on the river. Yes, of course, they're backlit but at least this day was sunny. Cool sighting! I need to clean our glass doors to photograph the interesting sparrows which show up in winter.

Achievement Unlocked! Bald Eagle successfully pulling a small-mouthed bass from the Fox River. Right time, right place, right equipment. Severly Backlit, but we were a LOT closer than the big cameras across the river. DA300 on K3III, handheld. There are a few more in this series if you want to have a look. She's learning. As a former breeder female she missed out on a lot of training and social skills around other dogs. She's defensive with toys, treating them alternately like her puppies and prey. It's pretty disruptive when the others want to play.
But yeah, Huskies remember their friends and can apparently hear them blocks away.

We're fostering a 6-7yr old female husky, a former breeder female. She's a sweetie. A couple weekends ago, on a crisp sunny day she was watching some birds in the cedar tree and stray snowflakes drifted down from the tree. With the DA300mm I was able to stand across the yard and get more casual shots, which I think worked out really nicely. The background isn't great, but you take what you can get. Nice paint chipping reference for us modelers... ---------- Post added 08-22-18 at 07:41 AM ----------
I know that feeling. They're either keeping an eye on me at a safe distance, darting around, or just in poor lighting conditions. I think since it's so far past breeding season they're a bit less wary and maybe the Refuge doesn't get as many visitors, so they let me get closer. I had been out there for about an hour by the point I got a close shot. I'll take it!

Now that I'm carrying two cameras in the field, it is paying off!
Green Darner - actually perched, mid-day, very strange since it wasn't a very hot day. Green Darner Snuffy's Prairie 070818 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr
The Darners are the biggest dragonflies around here. This is likely the smallest, the Eastern Amberwing: Eastern Amberwing Snuffy's Prairie 070818 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr
Variegated Fratillery. It's heartening to see some butterflies, their numbers have crashed. Variagated Fratillery Euptoieta claudia Snuffy's Prairie 070818 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr
And of course the hawks were on the hunt, here's a Red-Tailed Hawk: Red-Tailed Hawk Snuffy's Prairie 070818 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr

A rare one for y'all! Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Fermilab. They prefer to nest in secluded areas, so...they're in steep decline. Carrying two cameras in the field is paying off. Yellow-Billed Cuckoo KW 052518 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr

At Fermilab for a wildflower walk, the late spring means just the super-early stuff is out. Two cameras - FA100 Macro on the K7II and DA300 on the K5
One memory card to share between them because I'm a moron sometimes.
The DA300 works better on the K3II than on the K5. But, when a bird pretty much poses for you, it's still a great camera. Golden-Crowned Kinglet BW 042318 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr Golden-Crowned Kinglet BW 042318-2 by Terry Miesle, on Flickr
