K-1II review... Opportunity to get banned on DPR

It doesn't matter what brand you are using you will always be wasting time in post processing. The DPR Studio Scene attests to that. It is clear how bad the noise really is for the K-1, D850, A7III and even the Canon 5DVI. There is no denying how much better the K-1MKII is doing in creating a much finer grain image with better continuous tone and better value retention as ISO increases right from ISO 100. That translates into better bokeh. Better turn and shadow reflected light transitions. A more natural rendition for printing. Right out of the camera.

The K-1MKII crop is doing a way better job maintaining what is actually there. You only think it is smoothing. The K-1 image has a blanket of noise you think is "more" detail when it is not.

You can see the differences to make a decision on whether there is improvement enough to upgrade. When people started posting images it was pretty clear there is significant improvement. There was a thread started here by someone that did a nice job photographing a book with glass objects on top of a dresser with a K-1 and K-1MKII that gave an excellent comparison. Barely anyone noticed that thread. I can not even find it now.

The PF comparisons clearly show the difference. Using the DPR Studio Scene you can compare against other brands to see the difference. You can see how the K-1MKII is handling high ISO by simply starting at ISO 100 then increase the ISO step by step. To see how it handles Black, White, and Grey as ISO increases you can see that here. If you want to see how the K-1MKII handles color as the ISO increases can been seen here. The color comparison shows also how much better the black is being handled as ISO increases. It also dispels the idea that there is blurring and loss of detail happening when ISO increases. Doing the same thing anywhere on the grey background it is clear how the K-1MKII is handling increases in ISO compared to the other cameras.

For me it is pretty clear to have my K-1 upgraded.

Aren't you a Sony user posting at a Pentax Forum to bash Pentax cameras and users?

It is clear you have no credibility from your own standards not to "hate/discredit people for having other camera brands".

Andrea K I don't think the test is invalid. On a whole they get the scene centered and the focal point close enough to make general comparisons between brands. I find it very useful. I don't expect everything to be exactly the same. After all it is a scene with 3D objects. Things move over time. I can not fault DPR for that.

As I have said the DPR Studio Scene comparison contradicts the takeaway claims DPR is making about the K-1MKII concerning "noise reduction" removing detail as ISO increases. The image you posted shows that. In those ISO12800 images look at the lower left corner of the color chart where you can see the grey background against the corner. Which camera holds more detail? The Sony and Nikon at ISO 12800 you can no longer even tell the corner of the color chart is even there the noise levels obliterate the distinction between the color chart and the grey background.

It has nothing to do with the test being invalid. It has everything to do with how the Accelerator Unit is handling the information better.

normhead there is some utility in higher ISO when converting to B&W. This is one of the things that is so promising with the K-1MKII the files as high as ISO12800 maintain cleaner tonal range which create better B&W grey tone transitions.

Andrea K the ISO12800 even better demonstrates how much the K-1MKII holds more detail against the K-1 as ISO increases. Look at the copper coin. Nearly all the detail in the K-1 is gone due to the noise. That lose of detail is happening across the entire image because the noise causing the detail to disappear is evenly distributed across the entire file. Which makes the K-1 image look more linear which is making it appear "sharper" when it is not. Convert the image to B&W and you can see how much more natural and 3D the coins look in the K-1MKII against the K-1.

I have suggested this simple test to see how much better the "noise" is being handled by the K-1MKII over all three camera as the ISO increases by highlighting a spot of just the grey background then increase the ISO. Do the same with the color chart. You can see right from ISO 200 how much noise is introduced by the three other cameras. It is clear how much better the K-1MKII files are in handling continuous color tone across ISO levels. And it is excelling in the hardest areas to maintain the greys and the blacks. I can not see post processing doing a better job to what the Accelerator Unit is doing.

The low light test is easy to explain what is happening there it is the Accelerator Unit making the difference.

Class A I can see with my own eyes using the DPR Studio Scene comparison how much better the K-1MKII files are than all three cameras DPR set up in the MKII review in the Image Quality section.

The first takeaway comment DPR says this: "Baked-in noise reduction results in Raw files with progressively less detail than the original K-1 as the ISO increases. This can not be turned off." This is just not true as the ISO increases the K-1MKII RAW files are not progressively losing detail as they are claiming. It is the opposite according to the Studio Scene comparison. As ISO increases the K-1MKII is maintaining better detail across all ISO against the K-1, the Sony and the Nikon. Much better color night and day better.

Andrea K the DPR review is claiming that the K-1MKII is losing detail as you increase the ISO. This is jut not the case. Even at ISO 800 the K-1 image is already showing noise levels across the image that is reducing detail most evident in the copper coin. Compare both those areas at ISO3200 and ISO 6400 which camera holds more detail? By ISO 6400 the noise levels are so high for the K-1, Sony and Nikon any detail to the coins is basically gone.

Class A the DPR review is making outlandish accusations with "takeaway" statements like "Baked-in noise reduction results in Raw files with progressively less detail than the original K-1 as the ISO increases." This is not supported by their own Studio Scene comparison. The exact opposite is true to the quality of the images as the ISO increases. The K-1MKII in the DPR studio scene doesn't only outperform the K-1 by a wide margin it also outperforms both the Sony and Nikon by wide margins as ISO increases which is a surprise as they are using the newest BSI sensors which should have better high ISO performance but they don't against the K-1MKII.

I am still waiting for someone to show me were this progressively less detail is happening. I can show you all over the Studio Scene just how well the K-1MKII is outperforming all three of the cameras in the studio scene. The Beatles swatch is a good spot too see how much better the K-1MKII files are as the ISO increases. If you highlight the heads keeping some of the grey background you can see how much better the grey background is handled as ISO increases.

I find it rather odd that for so many years digital photography has been lambasted for ugly "noise" but when Ricoh/Pentax performs a minor miracle with the Accelerator Unit to cleanly get rid of the ugly "noise" it's a step backward for people now. Now they prefer the ugly "noise".

I don't think the K-1 image is any sharper than the K-1MkII at any ISO level. If you convert them to B&W what you will see is the same sharpness and a lot of K-1 noise. What is evident is the K-1 has terrible noise at all ISO levels compared to the K-1MkII. Look at the grey scale at the top. You can see how much better the color is handled by K-1MKII than all four cameras. It is not less sharp. The color just has better continuous tone.

I have a feeling the the Accelerator Unit is dedicated to just mitigating out the circuitry on top of the light sensitive layer. From what I have seen so far it does an excellent job. Better than the BSI sensors in the Sony and Nikon.

D1N0 I linked to the Image Quality part of the review were the Studio Scene comparison is set up.

I have looked around the comparisons between the 4 cameras and I am seeing no evidence that the K-1MkII has lost details because of over aggressive noise reduction compared to the K-1.

Ian the images are all sized differently which makes a difference in how they appear which makes it difficult to ascertain clearly one from the other.

DennisP have you done any B&W conversions in ACR. This is were I see the Accelerator Unit paying dividends also.

DennisP this is what I am seeing also from the images I have downloaded to compare. The K-1 images the color is much flatter due to the white caste across the entire image which makes the edges appear sharper. The cleaner color of the K-1MKII is adding a better sense of volume to objects which makes the edges appear less detailed when viewed at 100%. There is better spatial depth between objects in the K-1MKII images.

The PF image of the violet plant when you move the slider from the K-1 to the K-1MKII a sense of space between the flower the background color and the dark tree trunk really opens up. The hard edge of the tree becomes more defined in the MkII image not less. The edges of the flower in the MKII image is effected more by the cleaner background color than anything else which is another factor which is making it appear as though the edges are less detailed.

Hope you and your friend can provide some real world comparisons.

This test chart comparison is a good example showing the better color coming from the K-1KMII. I am assuming the K-1KMII is the one in the middle. The magnification is a little different in each image but you can clearly see the frosted color filter effect the K-1 has against the K-1KMII.

midbrain I am seeing better color volume which makes it seem like there is less edge sharpness. I don't think there is much difference between the edge sharpness the added color data just makes it seem to the eye it is less sharp. The color gradation in the K-1KMII images is greatly improved over the K-1. At 100% viewing it looks "less" sharp to the eye. But at Full Screen view brings better 3D spatial rendering.

The first two comparisons also demonstrate the better color fidelity the K-1MKII has over the K-1. The JPG image in particular it is clear. What you think is blurry is the better color value. The tonal changes are so much better in the K-1MkII JPG over the K-1. Those better tonal values at full screen mean better 3D rendering.

The RAW ISO comparisons the K-1KMII clearly has superior quality starting right from ISO 100. The slider comparison the K-1 side appears like they all were taken using a frosted filter.

ogl show me the loss of detail either in the PF test or the DPR test. I am not seeing a loss of detail what I am seeing in the K-1MKII images is better color fidelity. Which is exactly what the Accelerator Unit is supposed to be doing.

Setting aside the lack of consistency in the testing what is funny to me is when you go to the Image Quality part of the review the section of the Studio scene comparison highlighted the K-1MKII is the most pleasing. It looks more like a printed card and not trying to make it look like a face. Checking a few areas the K-1MKII was consistently better and across ISO levels. Much better than the K-1.

I am also not seeing any uncontrollable noise reduction that is killing fine detail. What I am seeing that can only be attributed to the Accelerator Unit is better over all color fidelity which creates better tonal value changes that have an effect on the 3D quality of the image as a whole.
