The 24mp sensor and shake reduction is a big step ahead over the 2015 GRII add in 14bit RAW along with the new GR Engine 6 and the Accelerator Unit the GRIII will deliver far superior files.

Seemed to be an honest first impressions review. They were lucky to get to test drive the GRIII on the streets of London and share the experience.
What I think they meant was the GR and GRII share the same 2013 16mp sensor. The GRIII's 24mp sensor is the major upgrade.
On a whole the PhotographyBlog first impressions sound like what was to be expected. Stellar image quality. Battery life. etc. :^)

I didn't see a link to this GRIII first impressions at Photography Blog with sample images both JPG and RAW.
They had a production GRIII on the streets of London for the CP+ launch.

The GRIII is long over due. The 24mp sensor with Accelerator Unit, IBIS and 14-bit RAW files will deliver excellent image quality.
"The Ultimate Snap Shooter" should include UHS-II.

Maybe with limited screen use the number can be closer to 300 or more images per battery.
An honest first hand on look.
UHS-II would address both the battery and 4k video limitations.
I have been able to get away with 2 batteries with the GRII.

Hey everyone can joke and ridicule that the GRIII isn't a "sports" camera. I certainly haven't said that is what it ought to inspire to be. I think Ogl's post sums it up. The KP and K70 each take 14 and 15 seconds to clear the "buffer" and this is probably what to expect out of the GRIII. Moving to UHS-II the "buffer" would clear in 3 to 5 seconds. This is advantageous no matter what or how you are shooting. Especially for the GRIII when used for street photography.

The "buffer" is "RAM". It's no different than a computer. Data is taken from the sensor processed then sent to the "buffer"(RAM) to be written to storage. The "buffer" doesn't slow down it gets filled up due to the limitation of the control bus for the storage.

Actually it is biz-engineer. Your post only reinforces what I am saying by pointing out that "Flash" storage is 1000 times slower than RAM access time.
The "buffer" is the RAM component. The data off the sensor is eventually sent to the "buffer"(RAM) then transferred to storage. Which is why it is so important to move to UHS-II to improve the bottleneck the slow storage causes to the rest of the system.
Especially with the increase in file sizes.

thibs I am not talking about your GR(I) I am talking about the coming GRIII. The GRIII should have UHS-II. As Ron pointed out the GRIII will have much larger files to deal with that UHS-II would have no problem handling.
In this computer age I find it hard to believe people can not grasp the concept that a slow storage conduit cripples any computer device.
The only reason Ricoh has added 2GB internal storage is most likely that they are using UHS-I. The 2GB internal storage will be used by the system as a scratch disk space to get around the slow UHS-I standards. UHS-II brings a host of other benefits other than 3x times the write and read speeds. UHS-II has extra contacts that allow simultaneous communication in both directions which would eliminate the need for internal storage.

The Accelerator Unit is welcome news. This should be the 4th Generation AU. The increased battery capacity is another bonus. It will be sad if they don't squeak in Pixel-Shift. Even sadder the GRIII is shaping up to be a worthwhile upgrade from the GRII but will still be hobbled if they stay with UHS-I. Doesn't matter how fast the rest of the system is or how gigantic they make the "buffer" if the data takes forever to write to storage.
Doesn't the Autofocus module have it's own CPU? It is definitely independent of the Prime CPU which the AU works with.

RonHendriks1966 the GRIII ought to be the Ricoh camera that receives first class electronics. I would think. What other camera does Ricoh have to focus such electronics on?
I don't think UHS-II is first class electronics. It is 2 steps below first class. The eventual PCIe is first class which the SD Association announced several months ago they are now heading too with SD Express. Formats like QXD already are using PCIe which is beneficial in many ways beyond speed to how they build the data paths. PCIe is a system bus standard for CPU GPU RAM and Storage to all work together more efficiently.

RonHendriks1966 I think that has been the main issue for me with Ricoh/Pentax their thinking of keeping things just adequate enough which leaves the user waiting for the "buffer" but we are not really waiting on the "buffer" we are waiting on the slow SD bus speed. A camera is no different than any other computer system. Would anyone think of setting up a state of the art CPU RAM GPU but stay with some ancient ATA storage interface.
If Ricoh is improving the sensor CPU Buffer etc they need to improve the storage capacity accordingly to keep up. The longer files are in the "buffer" the more energy they consume and the camera is held up leaving the user waiting for the buffer clear. This only adds to the benefit of street photography a more spontaneous camera operation.
I still don't get why people are having such opposition to something that is only going to exponentially improve the GR. UHS-II will improve every Ricoh/Pentax camera. Instead everyone seems to be satisfied with electronic industry standards intended for devices from 10 years ago that are just enough to get by.

The advantage of UHS-II is more than just speed the bus can communicate bi-directional with the card and the subsystems through the additional contacts on the UHS-II compliant cards. They wouldn't need 2GB of internal memory to run the GR using UHS-II. The biggest bottleneck every Pentax camera I have owned has been the slow SD card bus. Every Pentax I have used I am waiting for the files to be written to the SD card from the buffer. The K-1 LCD actually shows a little spinning graphic that indicates the camera is basically waiting for storage to catch up to the rest of the system.
Moving to UHS-II at the very least will cut that time in half even if Ricoh uses the top UHS-I 109 standard. It should be a no brainer for Ricoh to use UHS-II as it makes it easier for their engineers to get the best out of the subsystems as UHS-II has extra contacts. The camera will operate much faster as the buffer will be clearing twice as fast for the user. Clearing the buffer faster helps conserve power.

The GRIII is on the right path. What we need to ask for is UHS-II. The GRII should have had UHS-I in 2015. UHS-I is not enough for 24mp sensor. With UHS-II the camera will operate across the board much better.
What Ricoh/Pentax needs to do is create a real sister camera to the GR. They should develop a Pentax fixed compact at 40mm focal length. I don't care whether they use APS-C or FF. APS-C would match better to the GR and using a 28mm lens on APS-C gives you ~42mm field of view. But the camera people keep saying they want the GR to be i.e. EVF/OVF, zoom, FF etc is another sister camera to the GR.
Sigma announced they are going to FF with the Quattro. The Panasonic FF L-mount announcement also should be taken seriously. Back in the day I had a Panasonic LC1. That was one of the best digital cameras ever made and really set in motion the whole retro styling. Any one wishing for mirrorless FF Panasonic should help lift the bar. Sigma's real announcement was they ditched SA mount for L-mount only and of course FF size sensors. It will be interesting to see in the future the results from a FF Sigma Foveon body with $5,000 Leica optics.

This image of the rear LCD is the best so far to give a clear idea of the screen. The actual viewable screen is going to be much smaller than the dimension of the LCD cover plate.

Rush2112 what you are calling facts are just your feelings. Your first response to one of my post's was to declare if I or anyone else needed to know anything about the GRIII to only ask you and the moderators as defacto authorities to what was going to be acceptable.
On the rear LCD screen size the image of the screen on DPR printed to actual size the screen measures 3" by 2" with a diagonal of over 3.5". So it is either my ruler is showing illusionary readings or the spec data released on the screen in the actual GRIII under the plastic case is not accurate.

OLED are thinner and use less power than TFT-LCD. An OLED screen further eliminates the need for an OVF/EVF.

Rush2112 you clearly brought up feelings. I never said anything about feelings. So you are against better battery life because you personally never had an issue with battery life with any GR?
I have GRII. I can get the battery to last pretty long but I never use the screen. You definitely need 2 batteries all the time but that goes without saying.

But a proper OLED screen with a rounded edge to display information would be a nice addition. They use less power are thiner with superior image quality that can be viewed at extreme angles.

I have a GRII so I welcome Ricoh getting rid of some of the buttons. Less more efficient buttons is what is needed. I am always changing settings inadvertently on both the GRII and the K-1 due to the excess of buttons. Less buttons doesn't mean less manual control. I want controls that don't take my finger off the shutter button.

It may be an illusion but there also may be a mix up in the screen dimensions. There is a size for TFT-LCD touch screens with a 3.2" diagonal length as well as being 3:2 aspect ratio.

One can dream RonHendriks1966. With a proper OLED touchscreen we don't need any of those buttons keypads and four way scroller wheels which might make enough room to squeeze in the D-LI90. Without all those buttons, wheels, and levers will make it that much easier to weatherproof.

The spec sheet for the GRIII is saying a 3" LCD the same size as the GRII but the LCD definitely looks larger than 3" from the images of the GRIII. It actually looks like it covers the entire raised area the LCD is set in on the GRII so it could be more like a 3.5" screen.
For a camera being released in 2019 there is plenty of time to make sure Ricoh uses UHS-II SD card bus. It makes no sense why Ricoh would not want to use UHS-II it makes their job so much easier. It will only allow Ricoh to produce a camera with the responsiveness users are looking for.
The DB-65 battery is small enough to make it slightly less inconvenient having to carry around an extra and separate type of battery. That said if Ricoh were to move to a different battery for the GRIII they should either make room for the D-LI90 or D-LI109.

I think it is only a matter of Ricoh making the GRIII hotshoe compatible with the O-GPS-1 unit.
The GR works well for very close focus which is were Pixel-Shift would be nice to get the best and most out of the details. As would general landscape and cityscape images benefit from PS. If you want the finest detail nothing really beats PS.
I am not sure why people don't really understand the significance to staying with the much slower UHS-I bus instead of moving to UHS-II. It solves all kinds of limitations most especially at 24mp sensor size.
Ricoh shouldn't just move to UHS-II for the GRIII they should move to MicroSD to reduce size to help accommodate a larger battery.
One thing not mentioned is the Accelerator Unit. Let's hope the GRIII has the next generation AU.

Ricoh officially announcing the coming GRIII isn't "newsworthy"? I am not so sure about that. It is plenty "newsworthy" in of itself. Adding IBIS to the GR and finally moving to 14-bit files is significant.
