Nice shot! Is that last aircraft an MD-88? Boeing 717?

My sister flies CRJ-200s, which look similar, but their noses are a lot pointier :-).

That sounds like a great way to get people interested and to get real-world opinions and evaluation that users can trust. I hope they do that in the US too!

I realize the K5 is getting a bit old, but I usually upgrade my camera body only every other major generation. So I skipped the K3, and have been awaiting the next flagship crop sensor body. I don't think the KP really qualifies as a flagship body, although it does seem very capable. I was hoping by now to hear of at least some good rumors on what is coming next for the top of the APS-C line.

I just read more about this new 50, and I'm disappointed to find that it's incompatible with my K-5. While I have been wondering about upgrading to a newer body, I don't have any concrete plans to do so, and the new KAF4 aperture control makes this lens off-limits for me. I guess my bank account will be pleased, but my camera bag will not be....

I can't get the images to load on his website either, but I followed the link to his Flickr page, and the photos there do look impressive. In particular, the smoothness of the bokeh when wide open and presented with specular highlights in the background is excellent. My FA50 makes interesting bubbles out of such highlights, which while they look interesting, do distract a bit from the in-focus subject. They also show some purple fringing sometimes, which takes a bit of editing to get rid of.

I'm still happy with my FA50, but I see why Pentax decided to redesign the lens and what they worked to improve optically.

I typically use my FA50 and FA77 for portraits, so center sharpness is all that has mattered. You're right that edge-to-edge sharpness isn't up to modern standards, so that should be a place where the new lens can stand out. Purple fringing is also a problem for the 77, but again, something that can be avoided in portraits. Again for portraits, the screw-drive focus doesn't matter at all, so I didn't really consider that angle. The bokeh on the new 50 does look smoother and better than my old FA50 too, so I do expect the new lens to be better. I really was just surprised to see the price tag, but if you add up all these different areas of improvement, it might be worth it if those areas matter in your shooting.

I did a little research and am also surprised by the drastic difference in optical design. Check out this comparison!

It looks like the sheer amount of lens elements helps to justify its price tag!

Is this new 50 1.4 really going to be so much better than, say, the 77 Limited that it truly should retail for 50% more? It seems like it will have to be truly amazing to justify its price tag when you could instead buy both an FA 50 f/1.4 and the 77 Limited and have a little money left over.
