I also found the 28mm f/3.5 Takumar disappointing, which is a shame as it took me years to get one (prices seem to have come down here recently). It wasn't super sharp and the rendering was rather dull. My K 28/3.5 is excellent, so I'm sure they're no the same optical design.

The first one is a little over-saturated and over-contrasty for my taste but the second has a nice feeling of really being there. With that colour, contrast and light if you told me it was made with the newest modern lens available I wouldn't doubt it.

That's the first time I've seen bokeh where the first word it brings to mind is "aggressive"

Some people confuse the focal length with the filter size - I've seen "49mm lens for sale" at least once.

Can I ask how/where you get your scans done? They seem very nice - good tones, sharp and not too much grain.

Some more balloons with the 200/4. This morning a balloon went over the house very low and must have landed just beyond the end of the street. Unfortunately, due to a work meeting I couldn't head out and take some pictures.

I agree, this has a very nice feel to it. It has a lower contrast than I usually like for B&W but in this case that adds to a ghostly feel the image has.
Well that threw me at first, thinking "that can't be a photo of him"!
Then I look at my own avatar which looks like it might be a "cartoonised" version of a photo of me but it is in fact a crop of some street art I saw on a wall the last time I was in Paris.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be taking it apart any time soon. I don't really have any experience taking lenses apart and the few times I've tried it usually goes wrong. Being M42, if I put the aperture in manual mode it'll stop down before I take a picture.
Here are a few more with the 200/4 at the zoo

On another note, I've just noticed that the aperture of my S-M-C Tak 35/3.5 is slow to re-open after being closed, it's harder to tell if it's slow closing in the first place. Adapted this isn't a problem but it'll be a problem shooting on an M42 film camera. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had one a few years ago and felt it didn't justify the price and the 55mm Taks are better, so I sold it. I have a newer SMC variant waiting for me at my folks' place and will get that next month so I have no need of yet another copy. I wanted the 200mm that came in the package really, not the 50mm, but I've given it some use while I have it to see if I fare any better with it.
