I remember that case but for every bad review with nothing to back it up there's a glowing review that's then backed up by terrible photos...

It's because of film's non-linear response to light - differences in exposure make less difference to the final appearance. The same effect allows film to still show a good image when over-exposed by several stops.

You didn't try the lens though. And if I spent that kind of money on a poor-performing lens I'd be pissed off too. Even if he could return it, that doesn't negate the fact that he was unhappy with it's performance.

I agree with you on all points but excluding outliers will artificially prop-up a lens's reviews. The solution is to flip your mindset round to where the writing is the important part and the numerical score just a guide, as long as it has enough reviews for it to be reliable. The HD 31mm has three, so easy to see it's not representative. If the HD version had never been released and that user had bought the SMC one his re view would barely have put a dent in the overall score.

Reading that one negative review it seems perfectly valid to me. It may be that he got a bad copy, but then Pentax should be doing it's utmost to ensure there are no bad copies.
Dumping outliers would include reviews that sing a lens's praises too and give the false impression that there are no bad copies.
The numbers only tell a fraction of the story. If you want to get a good impression of a lens from the reviews then read them all, look for characteristics, both positive and negative, that keep popping up. What does this single very poor review tell us? Most likely that bad copies exist and that you should be aware of that and try before you buy, or buy with a guarantee.

I think your results are more likely to be improved by checking if any AF fine-tuning is needed. To my knowledge, Pentax firmware updates don't effect the AF of individual lenses.
