It depends how far your subject is away. At close focus 1mm movement of the ring can mean a cm of focus plane shift, just guessing from looking at the focus scale. Is that what you are seeing ?
I have only just got the 15-30 and have used AF only so far with excellent results. I will try manual focus soon, but I imagine that like most wide lenses if you are working with an aperture of f8-f11 you hardly need to focus at all at the wide end.

Tests should be done at widest aperture.
Strange but the 15-30 is the only one of my lenses that does not need any AF fine adjustment.
