One I got today while shooting the birds in the backyard. Perched on a Zinnia that survived the hurricane.

I haven't been out much and the butterflies around the house refuse to land on anything. I got this one at one of my river parks. Wind was blowing pretty hard that day. I didn't think it would come out as good as it did. Thank goodness for higher shutter speeds and sunshine.

Couple I got today at the city park. Shot with the Sigma 70-300mm @300mm on Macro setting.

And this one; so tiny he was. About an inch wide:

Nice set there Stuart.

This one below was accepted to PPG so I thought I'd share it with this thread:

Here's one I shot for my Single in November today: Using Pentax 18-55mm DA L II @55mm.
I think it's a White Peacock. I looked it up and it has all the markings of same butterfly.

Nice shots Tom. The top one of yours is a Cabbage Moth. I'm still looking for the second one.

Thanks for the compliment on mine.

I see this thread is still active and I have one I would like for anyone who can, to identify it. It's not a Florida White Sulfur because a Florida White doesn't have black wing tips AFAIK.

EDIT: found the name. It's a Great Southern White, this is the male.

Nice photos Vaughn. Love those swallowtails.

I found one I forgot I had. It's, I think, a banded Hairstreak. I shot this at my sister's house on her Catawpa tree.

I think you'd have to wait until the OP says. I wasn't explaining what they were, I was explaining they aren't in the same group or species, so that makes them non butterflies and moths. :D

Nice but I don't think they are in the same species.

Butterflies and Moths are this:

Lepidoptera

Derived from the Latin "lepido"= scale + "ptera" = wing, and it is the Order that contains all butterflies and moths.

And Lacewings and their kin are this:

Neuroptera

Pretty cool looking set of swallowtails. Did you know they are all females? I was doing some research because mine didn't look like the ones you, Vaughn and sakle posted. I found out mine is a male because he doesn't have the coloring on the tips of the wings.

Nice ones Rense. I saw the last one somewhere else, or one similar to it and wondered what they were called.

Moths and Skippers look so much alike it's hard to tell sometimes which is which. Thanks for ID. For some odd reason I completely have blocked Skippers from my memory.

Those are nice looking ones you've shot.

I see some great looking Butterflies, and Moths lately.

Thought I'd bump the thread with a few I took in the last couple of days.

Gulf Fritillary, finally caught him/her with the wings spread:

And some kind of Moth. A bit dark but I think you can still him.

FastStone is great little piece of software that's free. It's an image editor but it does a lot more. I've used it for a year now and love how easy it is to use. You probably have more editors than you need but you can check it out here.

And here are a couple I took this morning. I used ISO800 @f8, 1/500s. I think it shutter speed was a bit low because he/she was fluttering their wings and the images appear a bit soft. Course it could also be my glasses; I need to replace them.

Tiger Swallowtail:

I always shoot RAW. And usually don't sharpen much. I use PSE 5, for the RAW files, and FastStone Image Viewer for making the jpegs. And I shoot manual everything. Sharpening is done in PSE, with settings at 85%, Range at 1.5, and Threshold at 3.

I'll try IS01600 tomorrow and see how that pans out.

yes, way under exposed. I usually shoot at ISO 800 but that day I had been shooting at ISO400 because I thought it would remedy the noise I get from ISO800 in low light. This was shot in the morning, but shaded as the sun doesn't shine behind my house until afternoon. I've not tried ISO1600 for low light shots.

Another from my backyard. They seem to love my Zinnias. Sorry for the noisy background. I have to get a noise reducing software.

Zebra:

Same Zebra, diffferent view. Its head isn't quite as sharp as I'd like but what can you do.

Again, same Butterfly, the Zebra.

Sure is a lot of great looking and different looking Butterflies, and moths in this thread. I found another of mine I took while in Minnesota a few years ago. I haven't ID'd it yet. Well, here it is:

I have some I took on a thistle plant and they are in black and while film, shot with my K1000. Actually, so is the above shot with my zx-5n.

i completely forgot about Skippers. Now I have one I took some years ago in Minnesota. I never did get an ID on it. It's not the best of my photography either, so please excuse the blurry image.

I believe this is a Florida White, Sulfur perched on a Lantana blossom.

I knew there were specific info one needs to consider on researching either species. Fuzzy bodies usually indicate Moth. But there are some Butterflies that have hair on their feet. These are called obviously Brush footed butterflies. But danged if I can distinquish where the brush foots come into play. I guess one would need a stronge macro lens to see the brush-footed part. :D

Tom, I cheat. I have two sites that help me identify butterflies and moths. I checked both of my sites but can't find a name for your first moth and your last butterfly. Neither can I ID Tamia's. Although, I think her butterfly is actually a moth. :D Also, butterflies in gardens/zoos, can come from anywhere in the world, making it doubly hard to identify them.
