Me too, I was curious if it was to keep up with the D800's sensor.

Does anyone have a 28mm f2.8 AI-S that they've tried on a D800? Curious to see how this lens holds up on that mighty sensor.

With the fine shots you took above, it would definitely seem upgrading is a low priority. Not sure you could have gotten them any better with the G.

@jsherman
Just curious why you used the 180mm wide open so much. Was it an overcast day at the medieval place?

There's also the wait until the bugs are out, initial price hike subsides, and stock is fulfilled factor.

With the D800 possibly being announced this month, I may still stick with the D700 for a while. I like the file sizes from the FF 12MP. If the D800 is up to 21-24MP, the files will get really large.

Really can't tell the difference here of any 3 lenses. If anything, both 1.8's look a little sharper than the 1.4. Bokeh isn't much of a difference on any of them either. 50mm lens comparison shots
The only time I use a 50 is when I'm shooting with an 85mm and need to pull back, but room doesn't allow it (ie indoors), so I grab the 50mm. Otherwise, 35mm is more of a use anytime focal length for me. I use 28mm more than 50mm as well.

Nothing revolutionary for me to upgrade the D to the G. I also barely use a 50mm, either going wide or around 85mm, so just over $100 bucks was reasonable to spend on a lens I only use here and there. 200+ isn't justified for me.

I've been getting a ton of junk lenses from ebay lately. Even ones from reputable sellers describing them as mint. The good lens sellers are becoming few and far between.
You already list having the 28mm f2.8 AI-S, which IMO, is a better lens anyway.

I don't like they way the camera balances when holding it by the grip on the side. I'm just use to shooting 1,000s of portrait shots over the years with my hand up top. It's like part of the shot for me to do it that way and it's more comfortable to me. Changing that, doesn't feel like I'm taking my best shot. Guess it's a mental thing, too.

I find all Pentax camera bodies too small. I like the D700, but still feel it's a little on the small size. I guess it's from all my years of hand holding a 67II that makes everything feel small :). I rarely use grips, as I don't like the bottom weight to the camera, and find shooting portrait style to be an awkward way of holding the camera on the bottom grip. I'd rather rest it on my palm the old fashioned way, with my fingers on the lens for fine tune manual focusing. I'd like to see I chunkier D800 than the D700 when it comes out. I don't like either the D3X or D3S because of the built in bottom grip.
I'm pretty sure I'd like the 645D in my hands, but not at the current price!

I just picked up a 50 f1.8D, but haven't tested it yet. Figured it was so damn cheap, how can you not have one.

Luckily, what IMO is one of the best bokeh lenses of all time, the 125mm Voigtlander Macro APO, is available in Pentax, Canon, or Nikon. Although, very pricey and somewhat hard to find.
