Technical vs. technique

Discussions of bokeh did seem to arise around the time of all the gear discussion trends. It was just called blur or background blur before it rose to popularity. It's also a word primarily used when typed in a forum like this or written in a magazine. It's rarely heard verbally in photographic discussions, although I have heard it here and there at photo shoots I've attended in the past few years. Come to think of it, when it is brought up in person, it's always from that one photographer of the group known to be the tech/gear guy.

Excellent point. There are a lot of people who have no concept of this. However, there's no reason why this can't be discussed in a forum thread. Although, I'd bet that a thread on "technique shooting ____________ at different times of the day" would get a lot less views and posts than the the "what camera should I upgrade to" thread. One will make you the better photographer, and one will not, yet the more popular choice is always about gear.

Very good post.

Quite true. I've taken a lot of good shots I've purposely made unsharp.

I currently own Nikon, Pentax, and Samsung bodies. I'm definitely all for finding a camera that is full of features, easy to use, and reliable, but you're right, brand doesn't matter as I feel I can get the right shot with any body. I come to this forum because it's pretty damn good!

I think some are so fast to upgrade (although not in the case of the many patient people who waited for the K-1) that they do it without necessarily a specific need. There are those who buy the next body in line just because it has xxx amount more megapixels, or as pathdoc put it, they have to have the best.

I do think the artistic side of photography can come more naturally to some. I think I already had an eye for composition, then learned camera settings and exposure. For some, it's the other way around. If you can't ever get subjects and composition right in photography, it will matter not if you're a technical expert with cameras. I think it's definitely shifted to the point where people who take the plunge past phone photography, will focus more on tech and gear than photography as an art and skill, in online forums or in person (except LoneWolf's Scottish camera club, which I wish there were more of in these parts).

It seems not just here, but all over the internet, the majority of questions people seek answers to relating to all digital photography above just phone and social media posting, are all technical related. If you go to our beginner's help thread here, it's almost entirely technical related questions. Do people get too hung up these days on the aspects, controls, and features of their camera, rather than how to frame, light, and expose? A lot of photography discussions lean toward sharpness being a bigger concern than composition.

It's not just online, as in person, I've been to several Meetups where everyone wants to just talk gear, how much they spent, and what their latest toys can do. Talking exposure and composition seems almost passe´.
