Handheld meters and bracketing? You must have me confused with someone far more serious (and less reliant on serendipity) than I am! :)
(full disclosure: I do sometimes use a light meter app when shooting my light meter-less Rolleiflex)

Always hard to tell with different monitors. They don't look "really high key" or "a stop overexposed" on my Macbook Pro or 27" Thunderbolt Display. I could see them coming down some potentially but not a full stop. I kinda like 'em as is.

First roll through the new Olympus 35 RC. Still getting used to the rangefinder action, but I like it so far!

Yeah, for sure the 120 and 135 of the same speed are different emulsions. I tried the 800 in 120 once and didn't like it (I do really like the 400 in 120, though).

The box I have says "Made in the USA" on the bottom. I've never really checked them before for country of manufacture but I think I'll start. I do see variability in them sometimes.

I was skeptical about that f/4 lens, too, but I seriously haven't found it to be an issue. On the contrary, I'm pretty consistently blown away by how awesome it is, even wide open:
Re: scanning, sorry, missed that! My technique is to give it to the folks at Panda Lab and have them scan it on their Noritsu machine. :)

Thx! All of those photos are withe naturalnatural light (as is pretty much everything I shoot).
Another camera worth looking at is the fuji GA645. It's like a giant point and shoot (with an awesome lens). I was scared of all the fiddly film magazine stuff with MF so I went with the Fuji to dip my toe in. Still love that's camera.

Or maybe a Rolleiflex 3.5T? I was looking pretty hard at that before I bought my Rollei (MX-type).

I can share thoughts on a couple of those questions.
Maier (whose photographs and story are just amazing, I agree) shot with a few different cameras. She used a couple different Rolleiflex 3.5s as well as a 2.8. There's lots of great info on her here: FAQ | Vivian Maier Photographer
I've never shot a Yashica TLR but I've seen some great photos from them. Francesca Woodman, one of the greatest American art photographers of the 20th century (imo), shot primarily (maybe exclusively?) on a YashicaMat.
I love my Rolleiflex 3.5, although I am still debating about getting a brighter fresnel screen, like a Maxwell to make focusing easier. (I'd love a 2.8 but can't justify it for the money. I do like the bigger focusing knob on the 2.8, too.) The focus is accurate, but in some situations (indoors, available light) it can be hard to know if you've got it, especially if the point of focus is not in the center). The magnifying screen that flips down in the finder is essential; I use it all the time.
But when you get it, the shots are magical. |

I've had good luck with it, although (maybe speaking to the inconsistencies in the underlying stock) much better with 120 than 35mm. When I looked at this shot from my first roll of Lomo 400 (from a Rolleiflex 3.5) I thought, "why the hell am I paying twice as much for Portra?!"
Lomo 800 is my go-to color neg film for natural light indoors. Sometimes it has this wonderful painterly effect:
For the money, I don't think you can beat it.
