they are just hard to find nowadays. a rarity of sorts. to be honest, I only got my copy because I begged a forum member for it.

Thanks Marc. the original image was actually half-stop back. I decided to push it a bit higher because it reveals a lot of facial detail which to me looked a bit too much or unpleasant. great advice btw.

FA135 set at F4
1:2 cropped ratio. cropped image portion. shot at around 15 ft. or a bit over, IIRC. pretty strong resolution if I should say.

I had tried this lens before Douglas, and as you said, it is nothing like the K135/2.5 by a longshot and I could understand why it is being sold at such a pricepoint. I don't really like the colors and the bokeh doesn't look that pleasing. honestly, it would had it's ass handed down by the Pentacon 135/2.8. I'm going to do a 3 lens shootout between the Pentacon, Pentax FA135 and DA55-300 soon.

you got a killer of a lens in the form of the FA135. why should you be sad?

Ira, don't worry. the only time that I crop is when I crop it at 100%. so no crops here.

thanks Lowell. from what I see, the Tak has a warm color rendering but is the sharpest among the 3 lenses, more contrast and color variation. the Lenthar is a bit between the neutral side and warm color ( a bit the same on a few areas with the tak), center sharpness is great (center pop) and still isolated at stop down. bokeh though is entirely different. I wont discuss the Rikenon since the output looks a bit horrid for my taste.

it's a bit long for indoors. if Pentax finally releases a FF, then it would be perfect.

thanks. I appreciate. anyway, with regards to my 135s', the two lenses are pretty much different. albeit, in terms of colour, bokeh, sharpness, detail and contrast. the Pentacon shows a cooler side and paint-like pop to the image. the FA135 is warm, very sharp, distinctive bokeh and real-life. honestly, the FA135 is too sharp on some occasions. I had tried an SMC Tak 135/2.5 and K135/2.5 once and noticed both to be slightly sharper. also the FA135 suffers slightly a bit of PF on some reflective highlights. and the Pentacon slightly on some LoCa or bokeh CA.

thank you for the comparisons Lowell. it might be a bother to you to do the comparisons but it's good to see some tests that show the differences between 135mm lenses.
anyway, do you have any close-up or midrange shots with variable and comparable apertures that would show a much clearer distinction between lenses that would show the overall IQ variations between the 135mm lenses?

I see. there are 2 versions of the Super Tak. you probably have the first one.

fair enough.
anyway here are some Pentacon 135 photos. all are jpegs straight from the camera at varying exposure and lighting condition shot at different aperture speed. 1st and 3rd pics are stopped down around f4 (last pic I think) and f5.6 (first pic). 2nd pic is shot wide open. there are no pp done aside from resize. |

Thanks Lowell. the Tele-Lenthar doesn't seem to be similar with that of the Pentacon. the difference that I noticed is with regards to pop, color rendering and bokeh. although the Tele-lenthar kinda reminds me of the Sun Optics 85-210mm with regards to similar IQ rendering. kinda difficult lens to use if you ask me.

are the images here still with the Rikenon? or is it the Lentar?

Lowell, do you have some nice images shot done with the Lentar? I'm not sure if it's the same lens as that of the Pentacon preset but with a different maker. although from the image you have shown, it doesn't appear like it at all.

it's practically the same with the K135/2.5. the only difference is the mounting and the auto function for the Super Tak.

lemme just share my findings on this one. the simple bayonet Tak 135/2.5 does not have that same punch and IQ that the SMC lenses produce. although is well-built, it is somehow underperforming due to it's limitations. more often, you will have more rejects and find it difficult to use under certain circumstances. a slower SMC 135/3.5 is even better than it. if you are looking for a cheap 135 with a f2.5 aperture, a SMC/Super TAK 135/2.5 would be your ideal choice. or get the slightly pricey SMC Pentax 135/2.5, which is worth it.
I don't have any idea what Pentax was thinking when they made some of those non-SMC Taks.

I'm unfamiliar with the Peerotar. but basing from the specs, it's a 20 bladed lens similar to that of a Tair, except maybe that the Peerotar doesn't have that distinctive smell.
