The reputation is a little mixed, that is for sure. I got mine for $65 in 2007 and have gotten some good shots with it, but it is seldom in the bag. In 2007 I rated it "8" and would not hesitate to recommend it as a very decent compact option at that focal length. I am not quite sure why it is not in the bag. I should probably take it out for some exercise today.

Pushing the creative limits with the Dine 105/2.8 Macro and was having a tough time managing focus and the breeze under bright conditions a few days ago while shooting dahlias. I lucked out on this one...

60 years old? I hope not! That would make me over 80! Lester A. Dine has been in business since the early 1950s, but the Kino-made 105mm dental macro dates from about 1980 and later.

Excellent photos from that gem of a lens, BTW.

I saw that on your review of the Kiron 105 and was surprised because my Dine 105 has engraved markings. The paint may yet fall out, but might be easily renewed with a lacquer pen/crayon such as I was able to do on an XR Rikenon 50/2 that had lost most of its markings.

For some reason, the 35mm focal length is not prominent on many people's radar, which is very much a good thing.

Not that the Cosina/Vivitar is a bad lens, just that the other has such a strong reputation.

I should hope so! Isn't the Vivitar the optical twin of the Cosina-made FA 100/3.5 Macro?

Assuming the metal-bodied XR Rikenon 50/2, I would expect similar sharpness between the two with higher bokeh points going to the Pentax macro.

I own the 50/2.8 EX DG Macro and no, it is not compact in the least.

Good question...the nearest I am aware of by spec would be the FA* 24/2.0. It is 20mm shorter, 10mm smaller at the filter ring, and 80g lighter than the Sigma. The AF version of the Sigma 24/2.8 Superwide is quite a bit smaller, though your point is well-made; both 24mm and 20mm were rather specialized focal lengths until fairly recently and entries into that space, particularly AF are a rarity.

Addendum: In a fantasy encounter, if I were ever to find both lenses in the case at Goodwill for $100, I would likely buy the Sigma, mostly because I like the EX DG look and feel over the plasticey look of the FA*. OTOH...Heck, for $100 I would buy both and let them duke it for supremacy on the closet shelf for the entertainment of the other lenses (fantasy, remember).

Were it not for the bulk and filter size, the Sigma 24/1.8 would be on my "get one" list. Nice work!

I did a few test shots a couple of days back. Here are some examples (all similar subject), one of which was "explored" on Flickr. ;)

The Doctor is In

The Doctor is on a Roll

The Doctor Scores Big (My personal favorite of the three)

All three taken with the Lester A. Dine 105mm f/2.8 Macro (dental lens, hence "The Doctor") on my K-3. I think the lens is a keeper.

I have not done any serious work with the Dine yet, but will be posting.

I agree regarding 135mm being an odd or clumsy focal length on APS-C. With FOV similar to 200mm on 35mm film it is hard to find appropriate subjects. Strangely, the MFD of 1.4m worked real well for the product shot above and provided the desired flat perspective and FOV.

This is my first post here, despite having mostly primes on my shelf, most of which are not current or recent product. From what I have seen on this site, 135mm is not particularly common in Pentax Forums posts, despite being a historic "must have" in the classic three lens kit for 35mm film. I am so very guilty to the point that while I have a 135mm lens, I don't know that I have ever shared photos from it other than with lens test/evaluation shots.

Soooo...earlier this week, I was doing a product shoot of a new macro lens for the "Latest Acquisition" thread and decided to do it with my 1971 Vivitar 135/2.8 (Komine, 5-element). Aside from a little flare due to not having an adequate hood and some LoCA (both corrected in PP), the results were unexpectedly pleasant.

Below (left to right) we have the amazing shipping box, the Lester A. Dine Dental 105mm f/2.8 Macro found inside, a stack of Ritz Crackers to show size, and the existing competition, Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 (72BB).
