What is getting tiresome is the same old voices expressing the same old gripes (copy paste?). Perhaps we could create a sticky with the most common comments and leave a reference to it when threads like what this has turned into are quite reasonably closed.

That was my impression as well, though the OP was quite firm that exposure to other than precipitation had not happened. It is a challenge to remember to always check railings, walls, and other flat surfaces at the ocean before setting the camera down. Twenty minutes in a puddle may as well be five minutes in the drink.

I too always keep it in place, just not with the expectation that it will keep water out.

(...have actually considered getting a few of these covers for my film cameras, just to keep things tidy...)

The hotshoe cover is not part of the moisture/dust seals. This is obvious on close examination of the cover and when sliding it into place on the camera. The main benefit of having the cover on is that it helps provide physical protection for the shoe and can assist in keeping the area clean of gross filth.

First of all, my deepest sympathies to the OP. Nobody goes out shooting in inclement weather with the intent of ruining their camera, though almost all of us have shot under conditions where this is possible. I personally have even gotten a small warning in the form of transient bad behavior after 20 minutes of soaking (waterfall) mist.

A few pertinent quotes from previous discussions on similar topics:

Again, my sincerest sympathies go out to those with water-compromised cameras. It is tempting to point out that expected life-span of a Canon in the rain is measured in seconds, but that would not be helpful. I remember a (spoken) conversation where the other person likened seals to rugged construction. Many camera makers make enhanced build a marketing point, though none warranty failure due to rough handling. Most of us will node grimly when this is pointed out.

Again, like most of the other members of this site, I am guilty of pushing the limits of "reasonable and prudent" in regards to wet conditions. Sadly, I am also dumb enough to not have robust "drop 'n spill" insurance for my gear. I guess being a little cheap is also part of being a Pentaxian. :o

For the OP, I hope your dealer is able to work something out for you. It may also be that Ricoh/Pentax may opt to provide remedy. There have been rare reports on this site where the "water inside" rule was waived.

* Photographic evidence from the outing showed something more akin to a tropical downpour. The member lives in a wet area of the globe and was apparently desensitized ;)

** The 20 minute span is fairly ubiquitous...go figure

The user in question had taken his camera far below the advertised temperature range and posted a mild rant critical of the failure. Their KP recovered with an overnight warming despite the mistreatment.

Moisture incursion is another matter. Despite advertising stunts, Ricoh as well as Hoya and Pentax before them have not generally honored warranty claims where evidence of moisture was found inside a failed body. It makes no difference whether a sealed lens was mounted. The same is true all other makers, regardless of price or reputation. :( With any luck, your problem will be a garden-variety board failure.

Let's hope that a few days at the spa "taking the cure" will clear up your camera's ills and make it good as new.

What you describe happens sometimes. Conventional wisdom is to consider a power issue first. A low or compromised (unable to support power draw at full voltage) battery is a common cause. One of the benefits of having one or more extra batteries is that one may swap out the suspect battery to see if the problem goes away.* The second common cause is water incursion. A third is a main board or other electronic failure. Except where the battery is the cause, these things typically don't go away by themselves or self-repair.

As for previous models with shutter or mirror "stutters", there have been defects in various models at various times, but not quite like you describe. The closest might be the runaway mirror syndrome that happened with early K-3 production, though in that case the mirror would cycle wildly, but the shutter did not.

Steve

* I have three batteries (the original Pentax that came with the camera and two Wasabi-brand) that I use in rotation. The camera always has a battery and I always have at least one backup.
