Perhaps the condensed format is an indication?

Yep...
Product plans seem to be elusive when discussing Japanese companies. Launches often are made with little forewarning or even rumor. Several Pentax bodies hit the market in that way, the K-3 being one of them. I have heard it said that potential for non-delivery is a strong social deterrent against premature announcements of plans or intents.

I have edited my comment to include the ending, "As we know, that did not happen, though it might have been the intent. :(".

Good question and a reasonable conclusion. Another interpretation is that they ran out of existing stock before they could get the replacement to market (i.e. brisker than anticipated residual sales*). Photographic stuff is made in large, but brief, production runs and warehoused. The delicate game is to sell off at or near the launch of new product for that market slot. It is likely that the last K-3II was made sometime in early 2017 with intended replacement launch this fall. As we know, that did not happen, though it might have been the intent. :(

* Strong interest in the K-3II continued to run high on this site right up dealer inventory dried up.

Yep...good thing Ricoh decided to stay out of the fray. The cool thing is that FF MILC as a product type will be significantly improved as a result.

Sort of like on the LX, Pentax' first weather-resistant camera. I personally, would seek a solution other than interchangeable finders. A plugable EVF to the side of the OVF would do quite nicely, sort of like accessory viewfinders on rangefinder cameras.

The same way it is done on my Exakta SLRs. It is the mirror box that is exposed, the same way as when changing lenses.

While there are several old-timers here, a survey thread from a couple of years back indicated a membership with mean age somewhat younger than you. Historically, we have had our share of high school and college students as well.

They were quite explicit that it was not the K-3 successor.
As for the video, Herr Baus is in product marketing. From a marketing/sales perspective, the KP is the nearest thing to the K-3 to offer as an enthusiast APS-C camera. In other words, it is what we have and what we don't have is not something we can discuss. The K-3/K-3II were market peers to the very similar Nikon 7x00 series cameras. The KP, very respectfully, does not compete in that space.

I think he said something about a 100 year commemorative model with that name. FWIW, my German sucks and the transcript is not very helpful. I am hoping for a point-by-point digest from a native-German speaker. Addendum: At 22:38ff he returns to the subject of a K-3 successor. A good translation of 22:38 - 23:46 would be helpful, I believe.
