I have three of the four hood types (tulip, rectangle, and round, the fourth being the "oculus" type) and all three work. More important than shading the frame boundaries is shading the full diameter of the front element without vignette into the frame. Veiling flare may happen even in the absence of any bright light actually falling within the frame. A rectangular or tulip shape (functionally equivalent) may fail to fully shade the full front element and might perform worse than a round or oculus hood for that case.
