Helen Without Color

Sunny days with puffy white clouds are fairly rare at Mt. St. Helens and I was there to make the best of it while testing out a new polarizer filter. In the end, it was the monochrome conversion that won out. The view is looking south into the crater of Mt. St. Helens from near the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

River-S Haze

River-S is one of the major units of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge near my home and despite fall colors being in full glory, monochrome seemed like the proper treatment of this post-storm image of the Columbia River bottomlands.

Another from the Alaska trip. This one was taken at Portage Lake near the far end of Turnagain Arm. It was early Spring, so the ice on the lake was still quite thick enough to allow people to walk to where they might view the foot of the Portage Glacier around the bend and out of the photo.

Another from my recent trip to Alaska. As with the first (posted above), this was taken from a highway turnout east of Palmer on Alaska Hwy 1 (Glenn Hwy). The mountains are part of the Chugach Range and the upper reaches of the Matanuska River flows at their base. Click through for full location information courtesy of Flickr.

I just returned from ten days in Alaska and while I was generally too overwhelmed by the landscape to do good work, I did manage a couple of usable images. The photo below was taken from the shoulder of Alaska Highway 1 in the upper Matanuska Valley near the settlement of Glacier View. The mountains are a portion of the Chugach Range and despite their appearance are of modest height with everything in the photo being under 7500' (2300m) elevation.
