One would think so, on both points. The addition of AW seals on the O-GPS2 is a huge improvement. A little smaller form factor and provision for external power would be great too.

A package arrived yesterday from Adorama that I truly thought I would never see. Several months ago, Pentax announced EOL for the O-GPS1 unit for hot-shoe mounted GPS and Astrotracer function on selected Pentax dSLR cameras. Six months went by and O-GPS1 stock began to disappear from the usual online vendors' stock. On a whim this last November 11, I checked out Adorama and noticed that they were offering them as backordered at the regular price of $196.95 USD. I figured there was no harm in seeing whether they might be able fulfill and since the O-GPS-2 was probably a year or more away, it may have some value if it ever shows.

A quick look with Google this evening and it is possible that I may be able to double my money or more*. Who would have known. :o:o:o

Very nice! As a late variant of this long-running model, your camera benefits from a number of improvements over the original. I think you are going to like it. :D

The Singlex/Sears TLS has mythic durability. I took a fall skiing with my first copy that resulted in both strap lugs being sheared off on impact with hard snow. The camera survived with replacement lugs applied by a local shop. :D

We are a good-natured lot here, but a bit set in our ways. Lighten up and have fun in the sharing. :)

So...

How went the initial work with astrotracer work?

A week or so ago, I bought a lightly-used *ist D on the PF Marketplace. The price was agreeable and the condition looked to be EX-. On receipt, I was pleased to see a camera in exceptional condition throughout.   Below are the photos from the listing.

The question might be asked why someone would want the ultimate Pentax dSLR dinosaur. The short answer is that I was curious about its TTL flash implementation as well as what the *st D brought to the table in terms of features and how it differs from the flagship K10D that I purchased in 2007. The camera got here this last Monday, but play was delayed until a firmware update could be done on Tuesday morning to enable use of CF cards over 4GB capacity* as well as several other features related to use of aperture ring lenses.

After a few days with the camera, all I can say is that the *istD has shown itself to be a pleasant surprise in multiple ways, the biggest being that it was a mature product right out of the gate. Yes, there are shortfalls (e.g. lame playback support), but overall, it is a very usable and nicely compact 6.1 Mpx dSLR that might have made for a tempting purchase if on deep discount at EOL in 2006. There will be a first-impressions post as well as a detailed review. ;)

* Low capacity CF cards are very hard to source.

The Viv 2500 is a rather nice light/compact auto-thyristor flash with basic zoom function, bounce, and support for AC or battery pack power. Based on its similarity to my Vivitar 3500, I also suspect that it may share the 3500's safe trigger voltage. If so, double cool!

Below is a Vivitar Vari-Power/Slave module compatible with the Vivitar 3500 dedicated flash system that has been on my counter for about a week now.*

From the back attached as the working module on a Vivitar 3500 flash, showing power selection.

Attachment 560969

From the front showing detector for optical slave triggering.

Attachment 560970

The Vari-Power/Slave module is primarily known through a terse description in the Vivitar 3500 user guide. Features as listed there are:
  1. Optical triggering of any number of slave flash in sync with an on-camera flash.

  2. Selection of a 5-step range (full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16) of flash intensity for slave use of a Vivtar 3500 flash.

  3. Support of the above 5-step range for on-camera and off-camera use.

My main intent was to take advantage of #3, though #2 was easy enough to set up and test once I had the unit. I have no notion of off-camera, non-slave operation is supposed to work (cabled to hot shoe?). Both were unusual features back in 1981 when the Vivitar 3500 was launched and worthy of note in their own right. #1 is intriguing, though it appears that I am missing a cable that would allow PC sync chaining for shared sync with the module as a standalone unit. I have not been able to find the user guide, so I may never know.

Steve

* The Vivitar 3500 is of interest to Pentax dSLR owners in that it is capable of providing voltage-safe and flexible auto flash in a compact form factor. Also supported is full emulation of Pentax analog dedication for TTL as with a Pentax AF280T or AF200T without the bulk and somewhat higher expense of the Pentax product. Yes, there will be a full review...

Filterfind is a great place. They don't have everything, but if something unusual is needed, they more likely than most to have what one is looking for.
