Likin' the selfie, Colton. I'm sure you've seen it posted elsewhere, but the battery grip really makes the ZX-5n. Bought my body on the marketplace here and the seller was kind enough to throw in the grip, unbeknownst to me. Meanwhile I had already purchased the CR-2 or CR-3 batteries (can't remember which the ZX-5n takes off the top of my squash) in anticipation of the camera's arrival and felt obliged to use them. The ZX-5n is surprisingly easy on batteries (which shocked me in light of the body's built-in winder), so it was a good while before I had occasion to use the grip. When I did, it was a revelation. I've always shot with smaller bodies - first Pentax was an ME Super - and was happy shooting the ZX-5n grip-less. I'd read the posts raving about how the grip really completed this camera and found them hard to believe. After shooting the camera with the grip, I'm a true believer. I didn't think there was anything that could make the ZX-5n a better camera, but the battery grip brings shooting it to a whole new level. If you have a chance to pick one up, I highly recommend it.

Gotta chime in on your new ZX-5n, Colton. (I've been so busy this spring, I haven't even been able to lurk here, although I've tried to keep up with the "Show us your film shots" forum). I wish it wasn't so, but my best film shots have been taken with this camera and paired with my Metz 58 AF 1 and Portra 400, I've had some stellar indoor party photos. Enjoy!

Colton, great idea and nice execution. (I've just come into possession of a Rollei that needs some work. When I get it up and running, I'll give this technique a shot. And thanks for the workaround for the vertical film advance - I can be a little slow on the uptake and it would have taken me a while to wrap my head around this) ;-)

Kevin

@Hermawan, I remember seeing that Slash portrait before, but I didn't remember you having shot it with the Olympus. Thanks for the reminder.

@Phil, thanks for the nod.

@Arnold, thanks for highlighting your thread. Just took a quick look and when I finish this post, I'm headed back that way.

Best,
Kevin

Another P&S story...

Back in the day, at her request, I bought my wife a P&S camera for Christmas. I'm guessing it was the late 90's. At the time I had zero interest in photography and really had no idea of what I was buying. Flash forward to 2009 and I've started shooting film in earnest and I start asking Nancy about whatever happened to the P&S camera I bought her. Her response, "I'm not sure, but it has to be around here somewhere...". Neither one of us could remember what make and model the camera was, but we both agreed that it was in a black bag with blue trim. Another four years pass with no sign of the camera until we decide to upgrade our internet service and a pending visit from a tech necessitated a major household reaming and the black bag with the blue trim magically appeared in the bottom of a walk-in closet. In the bag was a Minolta SuperZoom with a half-shot roll of film still in the camera and an unprocessed roll of film in its canister. A quick trip to CVS for a new battery and we were back in business. I finished the roll in the camera without much hope of getting anything decent out of it and ran another roll of fresh Kodak UltraMax400 through for good measure and I was off to get it all processed.

Based on the photos we got back from the lab, our best guess is that the camera had been put away sometime in 2001 - twelve years ago!

A candid of my departed grandparents with me in background, shot by my wife...long expired Kodak Max400, Minolta SuperZoom P&S, ca. 2001

My mother-in-law, who passed this last April. Also shot by my wife.

Coffee cup shot on one of the remaining frames in the camera on 12 year old expired Kodak Max 400 shot by me...

Another shot from the in-camera roll of my place of employ...

The feeling of getting these images back from the lab was indescribable and brought a tear to my eye. There's nothing particularly remarkable about these images in terms of their quality or composition, but I wouldn't trade my best photograph for that shot of my grandparents. There were other family gems on the expired roll in the canister and in the camera and Nancy and I are delighted to have them - we didn't find an old P&S film camera in that black bag with the blue trim, but a time machine.

Kevin

I've mostly been lurking here of late (and jealously enjoying everyone else's contributions). I believe I threatened to post some shots from an Olympus Stylus P&S I fell into back in June - found it in the used case at Simonds Photographic and they were willing to part with it for the princely sum of $5 US. Trotted out to my favorite photographic haunt (pun intended) and ran a roll of film through it. Consensus is that it has a great lens (it does), but the lack of manual control is a killer. That being said, its built-in fill-flash is stellar.

Upshot of the experience is that it was fun, but I kept wishing I had an SLR in my hands. Will I shoot it again? Yeah, maybe, but where shooting time is so limited these days, I want to make the best images I can and this probably isn't the tool to do it with.

@Colton, your stuff is always worth a second look. Kudos to you for refining your scanning practice. For 4X6s, I'm happy with what I get from my lab; it enables me to share on the web and get a sense of what something will look like larger. If I decide on an enlargement, they rescan. The scanning is the weak link in my work flow here at home.

Kevin

Thanks to all for the many amazing images that keep appearing in this thread. They continue to inspire and have tided me over through the film "desert" I've been in since last February; musical commitments and a couple major digital projects kept me away from my film gear, but not from avidly following this thread.

This past April my mother-in-law passed away, necessitating a trip home to Gettysburg. She had a long, full life - three children of her own, eight grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Her funeral, while a sad occasion, ended up being a life-affirming family reunion. My wife and I had a day to ourselves to pay a visit to her mother's hometown Fairfield, PA and neighboring Orrtanna. I never knew, but Adams County PA is home to acres and acres of apple and peach orchards. In all the years we've been married, this was the first time we made an effort to drive through and stop for a few pictures.

All shots - ZX-5n, FA50 f1.4, Portra 400

The irony of this mail box wasn't lost on either of us...

Out behind the historic Fairfield Inn (1757), blacksmith Rodney Goodling was plying his trade.

(Have to say I miss Fuji Reala 100 - only "better" film I have access to via retail these days is Portra, although the more I see of it, the more it's growing on me).

Kevin

Agnostic, welcome back! I've been on hiatus since February; couple of digital projects and a whole lot of music work have kept me away, although I have a couple of shots I'd like to post when the dust finishes settling. Great to see your photos in this thread again.

Phil, nice work with the 67. I've said it elsewhere in this thread (and I'll say it again) - you medium format guys are killing me. CBA is rearing it's ugly head and I barely have time to shoot the 35mm cameras I have now. Thanks to you and pentaxK1000denver for the vicarious thrill.

Kevin

Fred, you may be right. I gave up on Superia 400 prior to finding my current processing wizard. Maybe I should run a roll or two through to see what comes of it. I did shoot a couple rolls of CVS 200 (rebranded Fuji) and had them processed at the aforementioned lab and was pretty pleased with the results.

Kevin

@Dembol, way to make an entrance. I'll look forward to more of your posts.

@Colton and hollywoodfred - man, medium format even makes Superia 400 look good . I've never had much luck with it in 35mm, but I'm liking what Fred's getting out of it. Maybe it was the lab I was using at the time. (Funny thing is I liked Kodak's consumer films and preferred Fuji's pro films, although now it seems I'm shooting mostly Portra as it's all I can get from my local guy).

Kevin

Montman, thanks for the tip on Kodak Gold 200. If I haven't done so already, I've been meaning to tip my hat to you for adding film to your wedding arsenal; you're waaay braver than I am. I enjoy your film posts a lot. If I'm shooting for others or on someone's dime, I'm shooting digital. Largely because I don't yet trust my photographic kung fu on film. (Yeah, I know - people shot everything on film back in the day, but I'm still blown away when I get a roll of film processed and the results come back with exactly what I was expecting. You'd think after three years I'd start to trust myself. Says more about me than about film, I guess). Keep those wedding shots coming - love 'em and look forward to them.

Best,
Kevin

Finished up the roll of Portra shooting candids at a friend's 50th birthday party. Realize these shots won't be of much interest to anybody outside of those at the party, but I'm sharing a couple because I'm tickled with how well the exposures turned out. I've been feeling my way along the edges of using flash, both on digital and film, and it looks like I'm starting to get the hang of it...ZX-5n's TTL doesn't hurt either...

Loaded a roll of Portra 400 into my ZX-5n on New Year's Day in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and set out early to see what there was to see. Unfortunately it was gray and cold, and I was singularly uninspired, and I only snapped three frames before giving up and switching to digital. Upon shooting the first couple frames with my K5 I realized I needed a stop of EV comp to balance the light coating of snow (and got annoyed with myself for not doing the same with the ZX-5n). Returned home to Connecticut without a lot of hope for the first three exposures on the roll of film and the best of intentions to finish it off in short order. "Short order" ended up being the better part of a month, but I've had the roll processed and tickled with how well the ZX-5n's matrix metering handled the scene. (Wish I had finished off the roll that day).

Fred, thanks for posting these. Really nice shots - I particularly like Manny and "Disinterested". I've yet to have your luck with Kodak Gold 200. I'm really happy with my local lab, so whatever issues I'm having with it are my fault, although it looks like it (and Dwayne's) are treating you pretty well. I have the M28 f3.5, too. Great lens that I don't shoot near often enough.

Last half of the roll was shot at parents where my wife and I enjoyed a quiet Thanksgiving dinner with just the four of us...

One from my dad...

What I am most thankful for...

Thanks to all for taking a look. (Not sure what the green line is at the top of the frame - it appears in the scan and very faintly in the print. Guess I'll have to take a hard look at the negative and see if it's there, too).

Best,
Kevin

Finished off the second roll from my romp with the ZX-5n last weekend over Thanksgiving. First half of the roll was shot at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the FA50 f1.4 and I was shocked to see that despite Hurricane Sandy and the following Nor'easter, a couple of the trees still retain their leaves...

UltraMax 400

...and a couple weren't so fortunate.

Funny thing is that both these trees survived the storms and came down afterward.

Colton, fresh Portra is looking good in the "new" Bronica, but to be honest, that expired Fuji 800 NHG looked every bit as good. Granted, we're looking at it via the web on a screen.

@Colton, thanks for the kind comments on the photos and the Thanksgiving greeting. The same to you and yours. Glad you are enjoying the Canons. We've been enjoying what you've been gettng out of them .I have an AE-1 that I like, although haven't shot it for a dog's age and an EOS Rebel 2000 that a friend gave to me, but I'm not in love with the lens on it. (Kit something-or-other), but I may have to revisit it after hearing of your experience. The one feature on all the "auto" bodies that I really miss on the manual ones is matrix metering. Center-weighted is OK and I've wrapped my head around it, but evaluative is so much better. Probably a hangover from having done so much of my learning on digital.

@LesDMess - UltraMax400 has treated me pretty well. It's cheap (when on sale) and readily available to me (CVS). If I want to shoot anything better, I have to go out of my way. That being said, I truly miss Fuji Reala 100 - wish I had bought more of it when I had the chance.

@Phil - thanks for taking a look and the time to comment.

Best,
Kevin

A Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating today. One of the many things I find myself grateful for today is the on-going source of photographic inspiration and information that is this thread.

Had a free day to go shoot last weekend and thought it was time to take the ZX-5n out for a spin. Upon turning the camera on, I was disappointed to see the battery indicator showing the two CR2 batteries as almost spent. I was about to reach for the "go to" SuperProgram and then I remembered that Woof had included the AA powered battery grip when I purchased the camera three years ago. (Had already purchased the CR2s while waiting for the arrival of the ZX-5n, so I decided to install them and hold off on using the grip). I installed the grip and batteries, and lo, the scales fell from my eyes...

I've said many times on this forum, that while the ZX-5n has always delivered great images for me, it isn't my favorite camera to shoot. It still isn't my favorite, but the grip is a real game-changer. Dramatically changes the feel of the camera and it's a real joy to hold.

ZX-5n, Kodak UltraMax 400, Sigma 20mm f1.8 (Man, after APS-C, 20mm is wwwiiiiiddde on film)

As have many before me, to all of you using MZ/ZX cameras, I highly recommend the battery grip FG. (Never really understood the idea of a grip, particularly with Pentax' commitment to smaller bodies, but now I'm entertaining thoughts of putting one on my K5).

Best to all,
Kevin
