Indeed. It would be even more hassle (read 'risk') if you had the grip attached at the time.
My first K-3 glitch happened while shooting a car rally the other week with grip attached. It wasn't a 'flap', but a freeze. The camera would shoot, but the rear LCD was stuck on playback, and the camera wouldn't turn on or off. It required grip removal, then battery drop, then restart, but at least I was standing still.

Not only the gear, but the poor photographer too.
Some cool shots despite the weather.

I've noticed that myself. Even just a tiny shift up to f3.2 or f3.5 can make a useful difference to sharpness and clarity sometimes. Flying bull

Indeed. Wide open the DOF can be pretty shallow at 200mm or thereabouts. Shallow DOF at f2.8 can produce a nice effect but it doesn't always work out well for action, since it's rare that you would be shooting an object that has all of the interesting detail sitting flat along a shallow plane. f4 or f5.6 during daylight will usually include more detail - eg more of the car than just it's license plate. Some great shots.
How does that ride/event work, by the way? It's new to me. Do you have an overview pic?

Indeed. Close up's in sport can be very expressive. Wider gives you the action, but closer gives you the faces and emotions.

More useful field reporting. Thank you for all the details.
In shooting low-light with telephoto, I never use matrix. Always centre-weighted.
In many telephoto scenes - exactly like this one - it's not important that the whole frame be metered, including all of the un-important peripheral activity taking place behind your son. The valuable action is usually mostly in the centre of a scene with telephoto. It's likely centre-weighted would probably have dealt with the shadowing of his body better.

For ISO 4000-6400, these images turned out very well indeed.
