A bare-bones Pentax equivalent of the Nikon Df might be OK, I guess. They might sell two or three hundred of them worldwide to collectors.

+1. One of the best comparisons I've seen.

But unless I am seeing things wrong, all of the comparisons so far miss the fact that the full-frame is shot from a low angle (hence we can see some of the underside of the lens mount, and the mode dial up top is angled backwards), whereas most of the K-3 body shots are shot dead level and directly perpendicular to the camera. This difference in perspective may have an impact on people's perceptions of the camera's relative size compared to devices like the K-3.

Too often people speak of 'pros' as a homogenous group. But they aren't. 'Pro' real estate photographers have different needs to 'pro' wedding photographers, who also have different needs to 'pro' studio fashion photogs, or 'pro' landscape photogs who go down to Antarctica for a month to do their shooting, or 'pro' band photogs, or the 'pro' architecture photogs who use tilt-shift a lot. Decent video may be irrelevant to half of these categories of 'pro', maybe WiFi too.

It's certainly nice if camera makers can build a kitchen sink of features into their cameras so that they are available to all users, but it's a mistake to label one or two specific features as generic 'pro' essentials, since not all 'pros' are the same.

QuoteQuote:

this mode just optionally crops the image

Fixed that for you.

That's what happens with every single FF system that implements a crop mode. Pentax will also no doubt make it optional.

About the weight...it's a pro-grade lens, and no doubt built like a tank to survive years of use and some rough treatment. And featuring a pile of big glass elements inside - 19 elements / 16 groups. Hence some extra weight.

If you look at the weight breakdown, and don't include the tripod mount, maybe the lens looks less worrying :)

- 'Bare' lens approx 1755g /61.9 oz.
- With hood approx.1835g /64.7 oz
- With hood and tripod mount approx 2030g/71.6 oz.

I've lugged around the Sigma HSM II a lot (1400g) at all-day events. If you are using a monopod most of the time, another 500g is not a huge drama. As long as the lens performs great, and is reliable, many shooters won't begrudge the extra heft.

It's all just firmware - eg to help the camera work with the buttons on the lens barrel. Everything else will probably work fine - AF, exposure etc - on any digital Pentax.

Pentax could probably update the camera firmware for every Pentax from the K10 onwards to make them work fine with all the new lens gizmos, but I guess they may just limit their efforts to recent (and future) bodies.

As asahiman alluded, DC ring motors (like those Pentax has patents for) come in all shapes, sizes and capabilities. The one on the 18-135 may not be the same motor they use for the 70-200, even if they share the same technology.

In the back of my mind, I share that fear.

But with the release of two new lenses that have been explicitly announced as FF (and are already being listed in stores), not to mention all the hoopla and positive feels the FF announcement has generated around the world, this FF announcement seems real. Ricoh would lose too much face if they pulled the plug on the camera now.

I hope that they spread the AF points a wee bit wider this time. And that it is all still -3EV.
I hope that's wrong about the flash. I like popup flash. I can live without it, but it's useful sometimes.

If you are talking about the body, I guess the price will depend on the specs (esp sensor MP).

But on B&H the Nikon D810 is $3000, the Canon 5D3 is $3000. So $3000 wouldn't be extreme for the Pentax.

I'm sure it will be optional and switchable, just like it is on (for example) Nikon and Sony when crop lenses are mounted on FF. No need to do anything different.

The body design in this prototype makes it look like a Serious Camera. Styling is definitely not that of a toy. Nikon and Canon, be scared.
