One thing they could implement in firmware is the ability to auto-correct lens AF by using the CDAF system to help tune PDAF. This has been discussed here quite often.
Now Nikon has stolen the idea in the D5/D500 with their new “Auto AF Fine Tune” feature, which 'after achieving focus in live view, automatically adjusts AF Fine Tune settings for the attached lens'.
Another handy firmware feature that may be easy to add is some form of focus-bracketing. It could simply use the in-built AF Fine Adjustment function to shoot (for example) a 5 shot burst where the AF gets sequentially adjusted +10, +5, 0, -5, -10. As a bonus, the bracketed images could be stacked in-camera. :)
