Pentax K-1 Continuous AutoFocus Performance

I think with the K-1, Ricoh were just being a bit conservative. They were working step-by-step through what they needed to do to deliver a solid, affordable FF to Pentaxians. It would have probably been technically risky - and expensive - to cram too much totally new stuff into the K-1, like new super-duper AF.

I reckon what they will do is put some fancy new AF features in the K-3II replacement, which will also find it's way into a future K-1 replacement.

Before that happens, I expect that we can look forward to some K-1 firmware upgrades to further tune and enhance how it's AF works.

Also note that AF coverage diminishes a lot on the D810 (and other Nikon FF) if you use a slow telephoto or teleconvertor:

Some of us can speak from direct experience of 51 and 39 point PDAF. Others who have commented here also use FF mirrorless. So it's not all fanboyism in this thread.

I do agree.

While I firmly believe the K-1 AF system is very capable indeed, as it stands, K-1 SAFOX 12 - in terms of the basic sensor hardware package at least - remains very similar to SAFOX 11 (pic related). Ricoh could probably have progressed SAFOX further in the K-1 than they did.

Some interesting new Ricoh AF patents turned up before the K-1 release, which highlighted some cool innovations Ricoh were pursuing. But I guess that stuff is destined for future Pentaxes.

I don't know where people get the impression that Nikon's are some sort of magic camera. Good AF tracking performance is not easy with any camera, even Nikon. It's never 'point-and-shoot'.

For proof, have a look at the AF-C shooting guides from Nikon (eg using the D500 for sports events or similar for Canon - eg the Canon 1Dx AF settings guide - 12MB PDF).

Good AF tracking performance requires good camera driving, no matter the brand.
