Nothing is confirmed except it will be APS-C if it makes it to the market.

Changing gear is expensive and may be of little benefit, it will probably involve loss in other areas.

If I was a professional working in that one specific area it would make sense. But for a hobby, you know that financially it makes more sense to choose another aspect of the hobby.

Or to hope for improvement.....

I gave up on that thread, I don't care that it works for some.

If I point the camera at a bird, a high contrast bird against a light cloud background and the AF tries to focus on the cloud, something's wrong. If it locks on the bird then decides the cloud is more interesting, something's wrong. If it switches bird cloud bird cloud, something's wrong. Hell, it doesn't have to be cloud, sometimes it does it with a clear blue sky.

I can forgive it when it's a bird against trees in the background, I admit that's tougher. But when it locks on the bird and you press the shutter it's annoying to have it decide that the object in focus when you pushed the button isn't the one you want. And when it loses focus it always, always, seeks towards the far end of the focus scale when the closest makes more sense.

Or perhaps we are trying to take shots we would never have dreamed of trying ten years ago?

As for the D850, I sometimes shoot with a guy who uses one and I can tell you now that sometimes it can be as bad as a K3 ;) and we have both missed the shot.

At least Pentax has the ergonomics and menus right, the other day I watched 3 Nikon users trying to work out how to change the AF.

On touch screens, I don't care if Pentax adds one so long as I can turn it off and they don't take away any buttons.

But the gear does have issues. The problem is people who are happy enough with the way it works for what they do saying that everyone else should be happy too. They should walk the proverbial mile.

AF-C stinks (on my K3) for what I am trying to shoot. Some of that is the lens (too slow to focus) some is the body. It damn near can't focus on a stationary object which means I have to continually switch between AF-S and AF-C. Even though I do this with user modes, it's still a pain. The environment I shoot in is continually changing, I never know what to expect and the time it takes just to change user modes can cost a shot (or at least the best shot).

The KP is an improvement over the K3 in many respects, if those improvements had gone into a K3, I probably would have been happy. But they didn't.

From the criticism of people wanting improved gear you'd think most people here were still driving model T's and shooting with a box brownie (with a Pentax label stuck over the Kodak one).

Perhaps just from the image down.

Yep, it's also a dumb spelling mistake on my part. Damn!

Is that 5 out of 10 users doing mostly Macro or 5 out of 10 users have done Macro? Likewise for the 1 out of 10?

Just jousting a bit there ;) Bottom line is that whatever comes must suit many users, anything too specialised won't sell enough.

Agreed.

Macro Lens club: 450,131 posts.

300mm plus Lens club: 2,900,541 posts.

Perhaps you have also fallen foul of 'personal wishes'.

But I don't mind, although the vast majority of my shots are of birds, I still want an 'all round' camera.

Focus stacking, fine. Pixel shift, fine. I'll use them at some stage. But make sure you through in better/faster/more confident AF-C and lower noise as well and perhaps a bigger buffer.

Yes, Rico's concept is a bit like saying if you put a really big tow hook on a bicycle it will tow shipping containers.

He's not completely wrong, if Pentax upgrade the rest of the processor UHS-II will be of benefit.

No, that may be what some KP users are looking for not all APS-C users.

I put this together with info from a wiki, I think it's right but I wasn't around for most of it so I might be wrong.

I think that while the KP wasn't seen as an *istD (K3 if you prefer) line successor, Pentax expected users of that line to move to either a K1 or KP but did not realise that there would be many who would believe that neither would suit their needs.

Attachment 456238

As for a new 'Flagship' APS-C camera, it's going to have to be either a, b, c, d or e.

d and e won't suit those who didn't think the K1 or KP met their needs. e may still happen with it now positioned as the mid ranged APS-C and either the *istDS or *istDL line dropped. Or the KP line may be dropped.

It's getting hard to separate fact from fiction, but I seem to remember a Pentax (or somebody from Pentax) statement saying that there would be a K3 successor but that it would not be an evolutionary upgrade but revolutionary, so that would mean c is out.

That leaves a or b, a would probably be too close to the K1 in pricing so I think b is the most likely. Whatever that means ;)

I think 3 APS-C model lines will continue but............

All the above in only my guess, I know nothing.

One nice thing with a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder is that you could overlay focus peaking on the OVF

Or you could have focus points that turn green when they are in focus.

So, so many things that could be done.

An OVF still requires a mirror. What would be the point of a 'mirrorless' camera with a mirror. ;)
