Are we really THAT rare?

In late April and early May, my wife and I took an Alaskan Inland Passage cruise out of LA - which had an extra 3 sea days up and back. I got up particularly early on the morning that we were going to be entering Vancouver BC to catch the bridge and the downtown area. So, I went up to deck 19 (yup, it was a large cruise ship) and was shooting the sunrise, the approach to the bridge along with everything else. I turned around and there was another K1 looking at me. The gentleman had a K1 and a K3. We talked for a few minutes while we were both shooting the sights. He didn't know about the Pentax Forums - I asked. I saw him a couple of additional times during the 2 week cruise - departing Vancouver and then again when we were up in Glacier Bay.

So, "we" are out there. That puts my "sightings" at 3. Once in Hawaii 10 years ago in a park. Then another gentleman from Germany at Mystic SeaPort, about 3 years ago and now on the way to Alaska.

A few weeks ago I was back east and visiting Mystic Seaport - and actually spotted a Kx. A German tourist couple was sporting it. I smiled and said something about seeing that they also had a Pentax. The gentleman said yes, but not many around. His wife looked at him and asked - why Pentax and not Canon. He said, better, cheaper and the pictures are wonderful.

I went on my way....

Last year I took a photo seminar. Just Nikon and Canons, and then me. The item that received the most attention was my little 3 legged camp folding stool that I brought, as it was just easier than sitting on the ground with my knees. The only comments were on the images themselves. I had a delightful time.....

I believe I have related this story once before - maybe here - maybe not - I don't remember.

I received an all expense paid 14 day luxury cruise to Hawaii, courtesy of the US Navy a couple of years ago (the Cruise ship was painted grey). Actually, I made the best of it and had a good time - as I was supporting a couple of new systems they were evaluating. Anyway, once there I had 1 day to see the island before having to fly back. I drove around the island and stopped at a beach for some pictures. There was another gentleman there with a Cannon setup (big FF, long lens, the works) taking pictures of Birds in Flight. So I helped him get the birds up off the ground by walking across to the water. After a while he came over and saw that I had my little Pentax K100 - shooting wide angle. Wonderful conversation - he was an architect and only shot Canon for BIF, otherwise, as he popped his trunk open to show me a VERY complete set of Pentax equipment (K20, and a very extensive set of Limiteds, Ks, Ms, As, DA*s, and some old Taks lenses). Actually, I made the remark if he had knocked over the Pentax Imaging on line store. So not all Canon shooters are not all bad............
