If anyone's wondering why I'm so absent these days - I'm reading The Wheel of Time, and I'm decided to go through all 14 volumes (plus extras).

DSLR's and the OVF - Pentax was right all along

There was a hint of that in the article :)
It could have been phrased better, and it could have mentioned that some people simply enjoy using an optical viewfinder. But, at least it still admits DSLRs are still a valid choice :)

DSLR's and the OVF - Pentax was right all along

It's probably just the author - which in this case isn't a former DPR editor.

Unfortunately the idea that we can actually choose rather than following whatever trends is often shunned on media (and social media as well). It's refreshing to see articles such as this one.

Why? Those people can simply go with the D FA* 50mm f/1.4, which is very much top notch. It makes no sense to be irritated when you can get exactly what you want!

These new-old FA lenses are for people who don't want top notch. For the Classic they even deliberately introduced a "defect", that special kind of ghosting. Clearly, there are people looking for that.
And it's a one-off thing, if only because there are no more FA lenses to "play" with (the FA 35 is already HD).

That doesn't make any sense. The film camera project only targets those photographers a. who want to shoot film rather than digital, and b. who are willing to pay for a new film camera.
That's a small niche. If it were "100% of photographers", then film would still be selling better than digital... guess what, it doesn't. Ricoh Imaging says that about 20% of their customers are using film, according to their survey.

Please stop implying you can understand Pentax while others can't. You're in fact so out of tune with Pentax/Ricoh Imaging than advising people to "think in the shoes of Ricoh" is utterly ridiculous.
No offence, but the Pentax people always put a great deal of skepticism and uncertainty when talking about their film camera project. Even now, they're not promising a film SLR - that's still a possibility. Mr. Noboru Akahane even said "I want to stress that this announcement does not mean we will release new film cameras." (although now the compact appears to be very likely). At the same time, TKO is specifically saying they're continuing with digital, precisely to quench speculations such as yours.

As for the "new" lenses, they'll work very well on digital. If you want sharper at f/1.4, there's the D FA* 50mm.

If I'm not mistaken, Pentax explicitly said digital will continue to be their main business. Which is pretty obvious actually.
The film camera project is a side project - and one they're unsure they'll go on with. It's the opposite of your claims.

Nor would the PLM, which is weaker.
I think we both agree in saying that it's not fair to compare the focusing speed of a lens like the 55-300 PLM and a fast prime like the 85mm f/1.4. The DFA* autofocus is typical of a ring-type "ultrasonic" lens of that sort.

I trust you can provide reliable information on Pentax changing their strategy by deciding to never make a D FA* lens again (effectively canceling the D FA* wide lens on the roadmap).
Or maybe not.

Thanks for noticing.
Interesting to see there's a difference between the old FA and the Classic in terms of ghosting (at least); although they're showing a simulated image.

Yeah, it looks they extended the front part of the barrel, and widened the focusing ring.
The optics are likely the same (except the coatings, of course).

I'll throw a wild, completely unsupported guess: aperture ring on the Classic, but not on the HD.

This is the part I said we can be sure of.
It's actually more optimistic than a mere "they're not losing money" IMO, as they're explicitly stating the camera division's on-going profitability has a positive impact on the Other segment.

They're not saying anywhere that "the combined PFU+camera generate a loss".
They're showing a (much smaller) loss for the entire Other segment. This is a positive.

You cannot draw such a conclusion from the information provided.

As you're well aware, there are other things in there than PFU and Ricoh Imaging; it's not possible to say which are contributing to the (much reduced) loss for the Other segment, and to which extent. What we know for sure is that the camera business continues to be profitable.

Well, if you are seriously into digital B&W, going with the big brands won't do much for you ;)

That's often missed, it's not really about which has the most options, but which has the options most suited for you.

Actually no, that's not necessary at all. Quite unwanted, I'd say.
It's far better to enjoy whatever brand and equipment you chose, than to "raise red flags" - particularly the kind that express a vague, unspecified general dissatisfaction that can't have any solution ever. Except migrating to another brand and equipment which would suit your preferences.

I'd be far more interested in - for example - people's opinion if an optical viewfinder would offer advantages over an electronic one or back LCD, for this application. I get this feeling that a Monochrome DSLR makes sense, but would rather listen to the more experienced folks.
I find difficult to see subtle nuance differences and gradients on electronic viewfinders. And, of course, LCDs are next to impossible as soon as the viewing conditions are no longer ideal.
(prompted by DPR's last "article" claiming that it should've been Fujifilm or at least a GRiii, definitely not "... a Pentax?" ;))
