Don't say that even as a joke.
The only thing complaining for the sake of complaining do is to annoy people, and if it would impact Pentax' speed it would delay things.
There's no successful case in which such complaining achieved anything good.

@zapp:
I hope you're right. There are some hints that you might be right... I just don't dare to raise my hopes, preferring to be pleasantly surprised instead :)

They never admit that, do they? They'd find the next thing to complain about, and go on and on and on.

Pentax should continue to please us.

I wouldn't read too much into it.
Ricoh decided to have a minimal presence, and the issue is likely with the Photokina itself - rather than some new strategy. I'm sure the CP+ will be a normal edition.
They couldn't even get their normal location - which was occupied by Sirui.

Where is your proof that I said the 60-250 does not work?
I didn't; in the post you're quoting I say, "I disagree that Ricoh could just transform it into a FF lens". I don't have to prove something I didn't say, right? ;)

It's just a lens, which I had and liked very much - until I decided to replace it with the D FA 150-450. OK, part of it was the reluctance to perform surgery, as well as compensating for the angle of view difference. Often it's not a single factor decision.

If it works well enough for you, great.
The issue however was if Ricoh Imaging would convert it into a FF lens. We know they decided to make a D FA 70-200 f/4 instead. I understand that decision.

Of course they won't do it. It's not as simple as you think: they'd have to guarantee that the lens would work without that component - which isn't their decision to make. Maybe it's as bad as having to guarantee good performance on FF (especially if you call the operation "convert the DA* 60-250 to FF format"), which they definitely can't do.
Any brand service rep would/should strictly follow manufacturer-defined procedures, and that's it. Nothing to be irritated by.
And if they wouldn't do that, they'd get burned. Customer "protection" and stuff.

You might be able to find a third party service, but be wary.

I'm not sure about "excellent"... I remember seeing good results, as well as mixed bag ones - before getting the K-1 and deciding that, hmm... I'd rather have a true FF lens.

I'm also not happy with other lenses supposedly very good on FF, for example the DA 70mm. But the issue is not with our subjective evaluations: can the manufacturer stand behind this lens, as a FF lens?
They did it only for the 200mm, 300mm and the 560mm.

I've heard it many times. 6MP were supposed to be everything we'll ever need. Or 8. Or 12. Or 16.

I'd like to hear the opinion of those optical engineers... just so it won't be an appeal to imaginary authority ;)
And then there's the question - how come that Pentax' optical engineers are excluded?

"It's adequate on my 36MP K-1" is not their goal, for a lens supposed to be sold for at least a decade.
The 40+ MP sensors are already getting old. Lenses like the Sigma Art are universally praised, despite their size, weight and higher price.
And we're asking why they didn't pursue mediocrity?

normhead: you don't have to pay a premium. You can just get any of the existing inferior 50mm lenses.
And I had the 60-250, I disagree that Ricoh could just transform it into a FF lens. A better 70-200 is the way to go.

Just reusing old designs is not a solution - and no, a few pieces being sold for crazy prices just because there's no good alternative is no indication that it would sell well as a new lens.

It's never that simple. You don't "just add a great big focus motor", you build the lens' barrel from scratch to match current requirements including a "great big focus motor".
Besides, you don't save anything by going with an old design. It's as difficult to make as a lens with new optics. You'd be just restricting yourself to obsolete optical performance, when you have an excellent in-house optical design team!

Sorry, but you're looking for shortcuts when there are none. Releasing a D FA* 85mm with the old A* optics (or even the FA*'s IF optics)? Really? This D FA* will be made to be top notch for at least a decade; old film-era designs just can't do that. They didn't make the D FA* 50mm a 15 elements lens because they had extra glass in their stores...

There are no shortcuts. Expect an excellent D FA* 85mm f/1.4 instead. It will be ready when it's ready.

Many are happy with old 50mms based on the 1968 Super Takumar design. That doesn't mean there's no place for the D FA* 50mm f/1.4.

It's way to early to assume that the D FA will be "not as good optically as the 60-250". Especially on FF.

Ricoh Imaging had their own, much more extensive survey. They prioritized the D FA* 50mm according to that.

Actually:
- a 70-200 f/4 is on the roadmap
- the 24-105/4 is not that much needed, as we have the excellent 28-105
- the 100-300/4 is not that much needed, as we have the excellent 150-450

One could make a point for almost any lens. But, they have to cover gaps, the largest and most diverse, the better.

Let's not forget, the D FA* 50mm was delayed because of a mechanical design issue (they now know how to solve it). Previously, it was said that development took longer because of the ring-type motor.
So it wasn't Mr. Masakazu Saori's fault ;)

Low volume is costly. Even if it's for a version of an already existing product.

When the other brands have the second hand market flooded with ring-type USM lenses and other such stuff, can Pentax afford to play the "low cost consumer alternative" game?

There are many reasons for people to be glad that Pentax is making this lens they don't need or can't afford.
First, it's not a given that they won't ever get the lens, maybe second hand, years from now. And it would strengthen Pentax. And its technology might trickle down in other products (e.g. affordable ring-type SDM lenses). And it might slow down the never-ending PentaxIsDoomed.

Right. I'd rather save those money for the D FA*, than get the aged FA* at such prices.

Screw drive AF is a concern for me, given the K-1's and future cameras' high resolution and the f/1.4 aperture. Especially with an old lens, mechanisms do tend to gain slack in time. The optics are film-era (the lens was launched in 1992), weather sealing is missing, who knows what time and usage did to that lens.
I'm sorry, expensive old lens fans - I'm a Pentax fan myself, but of a Pentax which is as much as possible up to date.

Not being top notch by curent standards and being inadequate are two very different things.

Of course the D FA must be made, Pentax must have an 85mm f/1.4 in their lens line - telling people to go ebay for a second hand FA just doesn't cut it.

Sure. But I wasn't talking about buying the wrong lens.
The D FA* will be a top notch lens. The FA isn't... not for my definition of top notch which, as you know, includes a silent, fast, reliable in-lens motor.
